  1. I currently own a x2 speed dvd burner.

I noted they now have the Dual layer DVD' burners out and that DVD burners are now up to x16 speed recoring.

Is Dual Layer worth it at this point? What are the benifits? Just 2 times the amount of data and thats it?

Also is the x16 speed really that much better than the x2? What's the time frame for an average DVD burn?

16x burn about 6 minutes. dual layer media is expensive at the moment. if you're looking to get a new dvdrw then get a BENQ 1620 or a PLEXTOR 716. you don't have to use the 16x speed for DVD+R media. i have no problems with my BENQ 1620 drive but of course there will be others in this forum site that will disagree to agree. just my 2 cents.

Dual layer media is very expensive at this point. It also suffers from quality (manufacturing) and compatability problems. Verbatim (manufactured by MKM) seems to produce the best DL disks. Personally, the cost is to high for my liking. Prices might come down a bit more now that DVD+R DL is going to have competition from the new DVD-R DL format.

16x (~22.5 MB/sec) is much faster than 2x (~2.7 MB/sec). At 2x a full single layer DVD (~4385 MB) will take ~27 minutes to burn. At 16x the same amount of data can be burned in about 5.5-6.5 minutes. Keep in mind that not a lot of media can currently be used at 16x (reliably). Good media is a requirement. So most people (from what I have read) record at 8x or 12x. 8x should be under 10 min. These times do not include the verification step(if your software supports that option).

  4. Guess I'll wait till Dual Layer stabilizes and gets cheaper. As far as dropping speeds thats great and all but 10 mins vrs 30 mins isn't that big of a deal to someone who burns on a dedicated PC (and never burns in a time crunch situation).

Thanks for the pointers guys. Guess I'll wait a few months to a year then

  5. DL won't get much cheaper soon. This is because it gets faster & only slower units get cheaper.
