Problem with NEC ND-3520

Just received a new NEC 3520 (firmware 1.04) recently and during my testing I noticed that this drive reads single layer discs VERY fast. When I rip a SL disc with DVD Decrypter or Nero the drive initially spins up at a fast speed and starts ripping at about 3.9x, 20 seconds later up to 7x and max's out at 15x. From beginning to end the drive sounds like it's running way too fast. I can slow the read speed down with the settings in DVD Decrypter or Nero and the drive isn't as loud, sounds normal, the problem is after the burn is finished. After each burn I always verify the data on my DVD's and when doing so the drive reverts back to the speeds listed above and verifies the disc in in 4 minutes. Is this normal behavior for this drive or DL drives in general when reading SL discs?

My only experience is with the NEC 1100A which I replaced with the 3520 and it read SL discs much slower, about 8x max. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The 3500 does read single layer discs fast, about 5 minutes. I've never had any problems with the drive whatsoever, it works flawlessly every time and I have been using it every day for months. I did have a problem with Nero and the buffer, but it wasn't the drive, the buffer works fine with Decrypter.

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm starting to think you're right Chas, it's just that I'm not used to a drive that runs so fast. I put in a SL disc in the drive to watch it in PowerDVD and the drive spins up and runs at such a high speed (noisy) even during playback that I just wanted to be sure that it was normal. I am a bit stumped though on why I can slow down the drive speed during disc extraction but it reverts back to the high speeds during the data verification phase.
