  1. Hi all. Ok, I have got a film in AVI format. I need to get it onto a disk.
Thing is, the avi size is 701mb. So, whatever I convert it to it will not fit onto a standard CD.

So,. I converted it to Mp2, in order to put onto a DVD, but the size was then 4.012 GB, with an additional audio file size of 1gb, STILL to big to go on even a dvdr!!

How can I get this onto a disk?

The avi should fit fine on an 80min CDR disc. As for the DVD, sounds like you used LPCM audio. If you were to use 192k AC3 then it may fit ok, perhaps a little over, but you could run it through say DVDShrink.

  3. Hi thanks for that. Think you slightly misunderstood though. I want to burn the film to a disk so that I can watch it through my home dvd player? An AVI is no good. And DVD shrinker seems to be for archiving.

  4. Try TheFilmMachine. It is a simple AVI to DVD
converter all-in-one with excellent quality output and requires little knowledge.

    Alternatively,
look in the guides under AVI conversion. You need
to adjust the audio and video bitrates.

  5. Hi-

    Think you slightly misunderstood though.

And you were more than slightly unclear. He's right; your audio is almost certainly LPCM (WAV Audio) to be that large. Just convert it to AC3 either using BeSweet, if you don't have anything better to use, or a commercial AC3 encoder if you have one, and then it'll fit on a DVDR.

how many minutes is your original video, and what is its resolution? this could help determine the best approach for getting it onto a cdr or dvd5 disc...

When I have converted AVI files to DVD using Nero, I've told Nero to ignore it if it went over 4.3 gig, then used dvdshrink afterwards to make it fit. Use AC3 audio instead of LPCM.
The higher resolution and bit rate your AVI file has, the better the results will be.

  8. Thanks guys. Still struggling here. Couple of questions ...

    1) I am using TMPGenc to convert from avi to dvd. Prior to having another go at the conversion, where in TMPGEnc do I set the audio to be AC3?

    Some other details ....

The current file is AVI, Duration 01.36.57. Size = 720x320, audio 48khz video codec dx50
    Audio - stereo 48khz. 16 bits, MP3.
