I notice when I record a disc at 8X or higher that the inner part of the disc has a slightly different appearance than the rest of disc. I know that the cause of this is because the burn rate in this inner area is less than 8X. I also realize this is the reason for the different appearance in the inner portion of the disc. My question is: Does this have any impact on player compatibility? If so, would it be better to burn at 4X to avoid this?

I find this as very odd and I do have a Sony DVD-RW was working ok before and no more on a new disc of that same brand.
It is version 1.1 and the Sony media doesn't specify on speed?
I may have to send out my machine for servicing and no hurry for to be done.
At the moment it is only affecting the four of Sony DVD-RW discs and plenty of others I have here aren't affected as in old speed specs.
The problem is only minor and the good thing about the recorder is HDD.

ChrisX, My guess would be your firmware cannot recognize the media code of the 8X disc. If I owned it I would check with Pioneer to see if there is an upgrade or, get a list of media codes. It won't be too long before 4X media is gone and you might want to stock up before your machine is made obsolete.
Of course your read problems makes no sense even if I am right.Still a few bugs in the system... -
@SCDVD
I think your are right about the changing of the burning speed (as seen with the difference in burn color).
I've heard that the "switch over" to a higher burn speed can cause a little "glitch" during playback. For wide distribution, I stick with 4x (or less) burning...George -
I've never noticed any playback issues resulting from the speed change areas on a disc burned at 8x or above.

My machine is already superseded even though I bought this 9 months ago.
There isn't much point getting the latest model either as they will all be obsolete so quickly as so soon after purchase.
There will be an 8x and 16x coming as well in the future here too.
See what I mean.
Sure, the incompatible issues don't make sense as sales people everywhere tells me that the latest 4x and 8x DVD media would work.
It doesn't work for me of course.
I am better off using a HDD PVR for time shifting of digital TV than use of DVD discs.
