VDub doesn't have the capability to do 2 pass encoding. I think that you need to do the first pass to generate the stat file and then do the second pass. You need to configure the codec to run each pass. You could try DVDx to do the 2 pass encoding automatically.

  3. Lantern is correct. VirtualDub can't automatically do 2 pass encoding. You have to first select 2 pass, 1st pass, and Save AVI, then select 2 pass, n'th pass and Save AVI. Otherwise use the same settings on both passes.

If you don't need a file of a specific size you can use single pass Quantization mode. It gives just as good quality (at the same file size) as 2 pass VBR but only takes a single pass. The only problem is you don't know exactly how big the final file will be. Consider using Quantization values in the range of 2 to 4. You can use decimal values like 2.5 or 3.1 too.

In my experience 2 is pretty much indistinguishable from a DVD source, even when examining still frames. At three you can see differences in still frames but not at normal playback speed. At 4 you start seeing a minor loss of quaility at normal playback speeds.

Instead of saving an avi for the first pass you can add it to the job queue if you want.

I rarely do 2-pass and I've never used the job queue in VirtualDub, but that's a good idea!
