I have MPEG2 clips captured from a camcorder.
According to GSpot the MPEG2 files have the following properties :
MPEG-2 Program Stream << { 1 vid, 1 aud }
Sys Bitrate: 153701 kb/s VBR
FAR : 1.500 (3:2)
PAR : 0.889
DAR : 1.333 (4:3)
When I convert it to AVI, the Aspect ratios changes to
FAR : 1.500 (3:2)
PAR : 1.000
DAR : 1.500 (3:2)
What is the reason behind this change and will there be any effect on the video

AFAIK, AVI doesn't have DAR like mpegs. It's always square pixels, so you have to resize (FAR) accordingly when going from mpeg to AVI. (FAR*PAR=DAR)

There are calculators & stuff, but I usually just try my way with the resize filter in VDub (lanscoz3) until it looks fine in the preview. 4:3 is rather easy to calculate - 640*480 is one common AVI 4:3 size, but you got to take the source res into account - avoid resizing up!

my mpeg 2 files are 720*480
which avi format should I decode the video to get the best results and without any loss of quality. -
Resize to 640*480. Only uncompressed and huffyuv doesn't affect quality, but ends up as huge AVIs. DivX or XviD reduce quality some, but you should get away with bitrates around 1000 kbps (depending on what's in the video) and (IMO) keep a decent quality.
