  1. Can't seem to use dvd20ne to compress Battle Star Galacitca Mini series but ideally I would actually like to span 2 dvd's with this. I use to use ifoedit in the past but long time since I tried this. What's good way that gives decent results to split big movie only to 2 seperate dvd-r's please...

    Thanks,

Do you care about menus ?

If not, DVD Shrink. Load the whole thing into Shrink, go into Reauthor mode and drag over just the movie. Right-click and select Set Start/End Frames. Pull the end slider down to about half way (you can also do it by chapter - might be better in this case). Hit backup and you have disk one. Do the same again, but this time change the start point to be where you left off. Again, hit backup and you have disk 2.

DVDShrink. 3 hours onto one DVD works out OK, what's the problem? How did you record it?

PS just wait for the DVD... probably boring anyway...

I didn't want to say anything derogatory about a mini-series that had me bored to tears before the opening credits rolled. If he wants to do it, I'll help him out - so long as I don't have to watch it.

Yeah I didn't like the original much either, but I liked the angle in the new one, where the "Cylons" took on human form & infiltrated etc... Kinda reminded me of "The Thing" or "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers"...etc... Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I just saw the first episode, I missed the second one. As for the TV series, well, I get a bad reaction to American TV serials...

How _DID_ you record it? The version I have was pulled off of satellite, and only takes up about 3GB. Just re-encode it at a lower bitrate, it's broadcast so it hardly NEEDS to take up that much space!

That's pretty sad if youv'e got such a small attention span. Your parents probably plunked you down in front of a TV a a baby. You'll never get to a great many things that are good... not saying that this is great but I mean in general it's kinda too bad for ya...

  10. Dam it... grrrr...

I've got the released DVD, good quality but all the programs can't seem to handle it!!

DVD Shrink (garbage program) fails gives error "encountered an error and can't continue". DVD2ONE also gives error as does "InterVideo DVDCopy 2". Can't get DVDxCopy to even see it (ya I know I hate this program too but I'm out of options here).

This is actually a pretty good movie if you like sci-fi and you give it a chance...

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314979/

Has anyone had success backing up this movie?? is this some kinda of new and improved copy protection I've never seen? I doubt it but man if you want a challenge give this one a try... I've backed up over 300 movies multiple ways myself and never run into such a pain in the #$$...

"bored before opening credits" this is just ridiculus why even post such a lame ass statement, I mean seriously how out of it do you have to be...

"I didn't want to say anything derogatory about a mini-series... " ... uh then don't... also DVD Shrink is the crappiest dvd replicating program out there, thanks but no thanks...

How new is this release? I actually looked for this less than a month ago and didn't see it anywhere. So it's possible that it's got Arccos (or even *GASP* ripguard!) on it.

Well, I liked it (the mini-series, that is). According to videoeta.com, the DVD was released on December 28, 2004.

For splitting really long DVDs, I like to use DVDFab. Not free, though, unfortunately.

  13. i had no problem backing up my copy of this DVD with DVD Shrink (never had a problem with this yet) and DVD Decrypter (different project); then i was able to do do all sorts of re-authoring/converting, np.

Go to Amazon ... it is now available in the US of A ... on DVD ... it's been on DVD for awhile but in Jan 2005 ... it became available in the US.

Really guys ... it is one of the better Sci-Fi shows currently on Sci Fi Friday.

I used the mini-series as an example for describing ... "compassion fatigue" ... in one of my term papers ... two semesters ago. I got a A or a B for assignment. I burnt it on DVD and included it with my term paper.

It is now a weekly series at 10 PM on Friday nights.

  15. Technical:
The Galactica mini-series will back up easily if you use dvddecrypter to rip it to your hard drive first and then use dvdshrink to shrink the files. It is a double sideded DVD, but the second side is just extras like commentaries by the series creator and various actors. I beleive that side B does not need to be compressed.

    Aesthetic:
The technique of using handheld cameras to film science fiction adds a documentary look that is disconcerting to people who like their fantasy clearly divided from "realistic fiction." Some people -- usually men -- also find dominant female characters like Starbuck and Six make them uncomfortable. I find it to be one of the most interesting examples of the genre in recent television. It also seems to be doing very well in the ratings.

It has a weird feel to it, again this tends to be due to the use of the handheld cameras, but also they have applied a lot of camera techniques to give it a "gritty" feel. Half the shots are typical sci-fi - albeit without the ultra-clean shots we're used to in Star Trek or Farscape. The other half are done in purposely washed-out, or grain-filtered cameras.

It takes a little getting used to and I could see a lot of people really disliking it.

And it DOES take a while to get going - then again, so did the original, and it's one of the most beloved sci-fi shows of all time.

  17. Interesting fzzy that you have had no problems, is this the released dvd version..., I'm beginning to think I have a flawed version or something, cause all my programs are failing including dvdshrink, I can't even get dvd2avi to crete an avi of it... programs start into it then soon crash, encounter errors or just plain quit for no reason....

I used dvddecrypter to rip it to my hard drive...

Like I've said I've never seen this from the other 300 plus movies I've backed up... *scratches head*

Actually I was bored by the poor effects of the Cylon robots, the substandard acting and the Dr Who does it better plot.

As my favourite films include Das Boot (Director's Cut) and Lawrence of Arabia (Director's Cut), I don't believe my attention span is the issue.

At least it took itself seriously, and wasn't "camped up" in typical shitty Hollywood fashion. HOWEVER that hand-held camera style ain't good in my books. NYPD Blue has a lot to answer for. USE A F#$CKING TRIPOD!!!!

Gimme Space1999 anyday! ...Or Lost In space! Or ... or...

Well I am NOT a big fan of the "jitter cam". Worst example in recent history is "Bourne Supremacy", which gave me a headache. Otherwise an excellent film, I almost had to leave the theater. And it was shaky in slow scenes, scenes that had no business being shaky!

ya what was up with that!! at times this movie was just plain irritating. I sure hope this isn't a trend developing more... I would have liked this movie A LOT more without the jittering, shaking camera crap...

If you don't like wild camera work, stay well away from Irriversible, Camera loops. goes through objects and generally acts like it's on the end of a championship Yo-Yo.
