    my friend from germany was telling me about mVCDs, and how they can fit a substantial amount of video onto 1 cd. with decent quality. Anybody hear of these?

    Not really "decent" quality.
    More liked "lots of stuff crammed onto a VCD with non-compliance".

    Another xVCD "format".

    MPEG1 VBR, etc.

    I hear it's pretty much the same as a KVCD. Impressive quality for a single CD (much better than a regular VCD), but nothing to write home about when compared with a DVD. However, as you've no doubt discovered, virtually all the info about mVCDs on the net is in German. You might as well stick to KVCD. ffmpegX already has a KVCD preset.
