ok so i am burning a dvd-r i had an avi file that i converted to mpeg-1.. then i used Pinnacle studio to burn it to dvd, ( took about 2 hours to render, and i dont know why) but about 20 minutes into the move the sound starts to get ahead of the actors any ideas? also the quaility sucks, either of these 2 problems be solved by using dvd+r instead?

Why did you convert it to mpeg-1, which is a far inferior format to the mepg-2 used in DVDs. The, by the sounds of things, Pinnacle converted it to mepg-2 before burning it to DVD. No wonder the quality is disappointing.

The has nothing to do with the disk format (+R vs -R) and more to do with poor technique.

I suggest you look at the avi to DVD conversion guides under HOW TO in the menu on your left.

Check the guides. I'm sure you will find that the audio in your AVI file is VBR. THIS is what is causing your problems. The audio needs to be extracted first, and processed seperately from the video. I'll let others more familiar with how to do this explain better than I could.

ok so now i know mpeg-1 isnt as good as mpeg-2... So i went thru the tutorial for winavi and did it just like it said, ( converted my avi to dvd ) but at the end it says to click on CREATE DVD and then i get to choose which file to burn..do i burn the whole folder titled DVD_0 or do i just need to burn one of the files inside that folder??? I tried the entire folder and it didnt work, there are several files inside of the video folder and none inside the audio one

A DVD has a Video_ts folder and an Audio_ts Folder. The Audio_ts folder is empty.

When a program let's you create menus and chapter points and outputs the Video_ts and Audio_ts folders for burning that is called Authoring.

It seems like the most direct route for you would be just to open the avi in Pinnacle and author your DVD. If the avi is in some format that Pinnacle won't accept then use Tmpgenc to convert the avi into DVD compliant format then use Pinnacle. [/quote]

thanks Presto that helps a little bit... I tried to take the avi to pinnacle first but the audio didnt match up in sync with the video..so i used winavi to make it a dvd. is tmpgenc bettere than winavi? or do they do tottaly different things? i dont care about chapters or anything, right this second i have this file as an avi, an mpeg and a dvd ( with the audio and video sub folders ) i tried to burn avi- didnt work, tried to burn mpeg-1 and it was so bad quality, and i dont know what to do with these dvd audio and video folders,,,, then i tried to convert avi with winmpg and it made it a PAL file, i bet i have spent 25 hours in the last 4 days trying to figure this out

also if i use tmpgenc do i have to use seperate video and audio files?? like extract audio first? or do i just put the video in there and let it select the audio from the video

  9. Tmpgenc makes several programs that should not be confused with each other:

Tmpgenc - Converts avi to DVD compliant mpg. It also does a lot of other things.

Tmpgenc DVD Author - Takes DVD compliant mpgs and authors a DVD. It will also burn the resulting files to DVD for you or you can use something like Nero

Tmpgenc DVD Source Creator - Takes most any file and converts it to DVD compliant mpg. It doesn't do anything that Tmpgenc won't do but it is easier to use and it is easier to do a batch of files with.

Tmpgence DVD Author can handle the files wether the audio and video are separate or not. I never demux the files because I haven't found it necessary but then I'm not dealing with the same files you are. If you try my method and still have audio sync problems then maybe you will have to demux as someone suggested. First I would see if Tmpgenc Source Creator does a better job of avi to mpg conversion than whatever you used before.

    1) Load all the files into Tmpgenc Source Creator and turn them into DVD compliant mpg files

    2) Load all those file into Tmpgenc DVD Author and make your DVD.

HOLY SH*T !! I finally got it to work......I took my avi, used tmpgenc express to convert it to dvd ( which was a mpeg for some reason ), then used my pinnacle to burn it to dvd, the only problem was the quality was at 60 %, and it was to big for the dvd, so i realized it wasnt the video that was to big, it was the audio, so i changed the audio from pcm to mpeg and the video was 100% quality and the audio fit ...... thanks alot Presto, the couple of tips you gave was the help i needed

  11. Great. I haven't tried Tmpgenc Express because It came along after I got the other programs figured out and working great. I guess it combines the other programs into one. Glad it worked.
