  1. I've taken an mpg file, run it thru TMPGEnc to create the proper format, and then used EZ CD Creator 5's VCD creator to burn to CD.

The problem is that my DVD player recognizes the disk as a VCD, but it doesn't play it. It shows no tracks. I looked at the CD and there are 6 directories, and the movie is in the Mpegav directory. I can play the dat file here on my PC, but how do I get to it on my DVD player (Sony S700)?

As Sony's are very fussy with the media they will accept, check out the DVD Player compatibility list on this website and see if there is a preferred layer colour your Sony likes. Its also advisable to read the user comments section on the far right of this compatibility list.

  3. Thanks for your reply. I have played audio CD's created on the same media, on this DVD player. I will check out the compatibility list too. Is that the only issue, in your opinion?

Do you think the burn speed is a factor (I burned at 12x).

    Thanks for your help.

Even if your sony accepts this media (CD-R's) for audio i.e. wav and mp3 files, it is by no means a guarantee that it will work for VCD's etc.

  5. Ok, I'll check out the compatibility list. BTW, where exactly will I find this?

You can of course try a lower speed - this sometimes helps. But as you said that you could play your CD-R on your PC - I doubt that that is the problem.

  7. Just checked the compatibility, no issues mentioned (CDR supported). I have been using TDK discs, I'll try another brand and color.

Other than that, does it sound like I'm doing anything wrong?

    Thanks again for your help.

...well you didn't reveal what sort of VCD you were actualy making. If it was something "naughty" Sony won't like it!!!

    Nahhh, just teasing.

Everything sounds correctly done as you described it. Another thing (which I doubt however) is that your Standalone DVD won't like the VCD feed made by TMPGEnc. There are a few players that react in a bad way. They for some odd reason don't like TMPGEnc and prefer a VCD feed made by Panasonic.

What you could do, to see if it you or your media, is download a VCD example from this website and burn it. If this doesn't work, it's 99.99% guarantee that your Sony doesn't like your TDK's.

I don't know about that, but I burned one "compliant" ont using Creator 4, and I have slowdown/synch problems on my Apex player. Now this is the only VCD or SeVCD I'ev made that has this problem. First, this is the only NON-VBR one I've made. Second, it's the only one I burned in Easy CD Creator 4.

I lean towards believing that there is something nuts with the burning program. Especially since the standalone is really very good, why would it have a consistent, repeatable problem, but with a VCD that's supposed to be "standard"?

It's the burning program, I think... All mine burned in NERO work great.

P.S. - in hindsight, I could believe it's TMPGenc too... maybe it does have a bad reaction... but since all my VBR MPEG-1 work perfectly, no worries!

  10. Ok, I'll give that a try. I imagine the example won't be too hard to find. BTW, it's not naughty, but it is not entirely kosher: a copy of Tomb Raider my son got off the net...

Careful - Having EZ CD Creator and another burning program installed on the same machine at the same time can cause serious problems as others have noticed... Uninstall EZ beforehand!!!

Do you think I'd be better off with Nero, as opposed to EZ CD?

    Thanks

If I say "Yes" you'll probably get loads of posts saying Nero is sh** use this and that etc. Personally I find Nero does want it is supposed to do with a few exceptions, but they are easy to control. I have used WinOnCD and another program, can't remember the name, but so far I am quite content with Nero.

Yes! Once! But only because it was the only program at that time that I knew of that took cif image files. And I didn't like it, especially as I had to re-install Nero afterwards because of the now known issue.

Just so I understand, if I want to try Nero, I should un-install EZ CD first? Anything else? I'd like to give it a try....Perhaps that will solve my VCD creation issue...

Yes uninstall EZ creator first. Anything else? Nah, can't think of anything else you should watch out for, but then again its 5.15 am here now and I need some sleep - so good luck and if you continue to have problems, you know where to ask!
