Okay...when ripping some dvd's that are widescreen (16:9) it appears in dvd2avi, after ripping that they are in fact 4:3. Does this mean that the film has been put on the dvd in 4:3 format and that my dvd player adds the bars to display the film correctly?
If so does this mean in TMPGenc that I need to set the source ratio to 16:9 625 line (PAL) and the destination to 4:3 so that the bars are added by TMPGenc as obviously my dvd player won't do this for a vcd.
Secondly, if the dvd says it is in 16:9 I set TMPGeng to 16:9 625 line (PAL) for the source and 4:3 (PAL) for the destination - this I know is okay (I think!). The question is, if the DVD says it is 2.35:1 surely there needs to be some setting in TMPGenc to set the source to 2.35:1 or am I missing something I need to do before I get to this process?
Cheers
Funky....

Wide screen DVD but show in DVD2AVI as 4:3, mean this is a 4:3 (full screen) format DVD. Why it wide screen? because movie maker already add permanent black bar on top and bottom of 16:9 movie. In this kind of movie you will not be able to change any setting (for letterbox or fullscreen), you have to treat the DVD as full screen in your setting.
About 2.35:1 type of DVD, I believe this is a letterbox type screen, so in your setting, you have to set source as 16:9. BTW if you want full screen from 2.35:1 DVD just set to "fit to frame" otherwise you will get letterbox screen. -
if u wanna have your dvd rip exactly like the original in terms of aspect ratio...make sure u choose
fit to screen (preserve aspect ratio)
all fullscreen dvds are 4:3....and most widescreen dvds are 16:9..but i have seen some 4:3 widescreens too
