An authoring question...One worth Answering

I've downloaded a many movie in my day and have always seen people put letters in the upper left hand corner of the movie live "R" for instance or "NG" or their name sometimes. I have even seen those letters moive around occasionally. Sometimes, when the movie is in widescreen, I've seen people write their email address on the bottom corner. Please tell me how to do this, OR BETTER YET, how to remove it. What program do they use???
