    I've been considering purchasing the Hauppauge PVR-250, and was wondering if the card can be used to capture AVI format using programs like IUVCR, FreeVCR, etc., or is it limited to strictly MPEG encoding?

    The PVR-250 (and the 150, 350, and USB2 for that matter) only capture in MPEG. In theory, a program could convert the MPEG to DV or some other AVI codec while capturing but I haven't seen any programs that do that. In fact there are very few programs that can capture from the PVR-250 because they don't know how to handle from hardware MPEG cards.
