  1. Hi guys,

I recently decided to backup "Out for Justice" an old Steven Seagal movie. The DVD was a DVD5. I backed up the disc to the Hard Drive using Clone DVD 2 and it took approx. 15 minutes. After burning the disc I decided to see if the backup would copy to the hard drive any quicker and sure enough it did (6 minutes). Does anyone know why this is the case? It seems strange since no transcoding was required.

    (1) The original was double layer (unlikely since no transcoding/shrinking was needed)

    (2) Many DVD drives limit the read speed of pressed DVD-ROMs to avoid excessive noise/vibration.

(2.1) The read speed is limited by the following: Hardware, Firmware, software (can sometimes be used to force faster/slower read speeds, such as Nero DVDSpeed - keep in mind not all DVD drives may work with such software), and the condition of the disc being read (scratched/dirty/fingerprints).

A possible test: Try copying/reading a DVD+R disc that has been bitset to DVD-ROM.

Work around: Use software to (force) speed up the drive (2.1 above), Flash the drive with a firmware that supports faster read speeds of DVD-ROM (hacked firmware will VOID warranty).

  4. I had AnyDVD running in the background so the DVD did not come up as Encrypted.
