  1. Ave,

First of all i'm not 100% sure this is the right place for this post, but i don't know where else it would fit.

I've just ventured into the Dual Layer DVD technology and i'm having some issues.

I purchased a pack of Memorex Dual Layer DVD+R 8.5 GB 2.4x blank media.

I have a Pioneer DVR A08 Dual Layer burner.

Yesterday for the first time, i burned over 7 GB of DVD Video files (VOB, IFO etcetera.. the usual) of a movie onto my Memorex Dual Layer DVD disc, using Nero 6.6 Ultra Edition.

Everything went great... and my DVD actually works fine in all my DVD Players except one.

My first question is, does Dual Layer DVD Media come in DVD-R or is it only available in DVD+R? I suspect my Panasonic Home Theater system does not play DVD+R.
Second questions, is Nero 6.6 the best way to go burning Dual Layer DVD?
Third Question, when i put in my DVD Movie in my Panasonic DVD player, it brings up the beginning trailer sequences, the Main Menu, and you can navigate into the menus, it just doesn't play the Movie. When you want to play the movie, or any chapter.. the Menu fades out and it reloads the Main Menu.. it just doesn't go to the Movie. However in any other DVD Player i have, it plays the Movie perfectly fine. Is this a DVD+R issue? Or do i need to do something else in my Burning Process? I have no clue.

Any help is more then appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mickey

You may want to look up the player that doesn't work and see if it is compatible with DL media.

  3. Ave,

The player is compatible with DL media, it's not compatible with DVD+R media though. And the DL Media i used is DVD+R because i didn't know of any DVD-R DL Media.

When is the DVD-R DL Media supposed to be released by Mitsubishi? Any news on that?

    Thanks,
    Mickey

    Ave,

Trust me, your surprise and bafflement is shared with me.
Here's the thing... the manual of the DVD Player clearly states which DVD formats are compatible with the Player, and DVD+R is not one of them. And further down the there is a section "Discs which cannot played" and DVD+R, DVD+RW and a few others appear. Which makes it clear that this DVD Player does not play DVD+R discs.
The issue that baffles me is, i have a lot of DVDs that i purchase from the store... retail original movies, like AVP, The Ring, Aliens.. and lots & lots others... they are all indeed Dual Layer. Those DVDs do not say wether they are DVD+R or DVD-R as they are orginal retail movies, not blank media, but they all tell you that they are Dual Layer. But all those retail original DVDs work on my Player absolutely fine! No problems!!

Thus, it reads Dual Layer discs that i buy in the store.. original movies. But anything i burn on a Dual Layer DVD+R it's not playing.

    Any suggestions!

    Mickey

DUAL LAYER REPLICATED FARE (not burned)
    is compatible
and isn't referred to as "+" or "-"
Its just a store bought title

You'll just hav'ta wait for those Dual Layer "-" blanks to come out and return the Dual Layer "+" media to the store..
Note your PIONEER will in fact play SINGLE LAYER BURNS on PLUS MEDIA in most cases..Don't expect to play SET TOP recordings on plus media however..

    Ave,

Thanks!! That actually explains a lot.
I will be waiting for those DVD-R's ... anyone any ideas when they are coming out?

    Thanks again,
    Mickey

    By the way
How to tell "REPLICATED" from "BURNED"
without putting it in the drive (and using DVD identifier or such)
    turn the disc over, and:
    1. Replicated is Silver or Gold

    2. Burned is Purple in 98% of the cases
