    Absolutely.

I have a deactivated one in the car.
It'll get 911 if I need it too. Or so I hear.

I used to have to use one before I ordered that kit from the late night infomercial and fine tuned my telepathy skills.

  14. I remember how cool I felt the first time I got one (97?). I paid some guy working in the industry $200 & he gave me an unlimited cell. No bill, no charges. Pretty sweet. Sold it when I moved out of state.

Now I'd give anything to get rid of it. I'm working on that presently.

Exactly the same with me. I have a deactivated one with a charged battery in my car for 911 calls only. I was told by Sprint that it would work for this purpose at any time, with or without service. Haven't had to use it yet for this, hopefully I won't need it.

I deactivated it when I moved to my present location and wound up in a black hole for cell calls. There are cell towers within a couple of miles, but the service is so weak that the phone was useless at home.

Deactivated over a year ago and I don't miss it at all.

All it takes is a phone call - presto, deactivo!

Of course, they tried very hard to get me to stay, but they couldn't do anything about the lack of signal, so bye, bye!

Nothing to be jealous of, make a call and cut the cord (heh, no pun intended)

    Tracfone here...

For $95 I get 150 minutes per year plus 100 bonus minutes (because they have a Christmas time bonus offer). That's 250 minutes year or 20 minutes per month. Thats all I ever need and with time to spare. Hell, I'm looking for ways to get away from the damn phone, not use it more.

yep, and if I had broadband, I would have the land line taken out. Land Line is completely stripped and has no long distance capabilities

it's funny how the cell companys try to sell you the cheapest plan for the only for emergency calls

fact: you can make 911 calls with a deactivated cell. you can make a credit card call with a deactivated cell. you can even make a collect call with a deactivated phone

I've got a Nokia 3200 which I bought on prepaid and then switched my existing SIM card into.. I'm on a $5 plan with $5 worth of free calls so it doesn't cost me shit all.

    $5?

Are Oz dollars more or less than US dollars?

    PS: thanks for the reply.

I have virgin mobile prepay. I use mainly for getting messages.

I usually spend the minimum to keep my minutes from being erased.

It works out to about $7 USD a month, but $4 that's cheap.

When I was in UK, I explored many options. Whereas Vodafone was having the best coverage all around, I found Virgin to be the best when it came to value for money. For a £10 initial prepaid connection card, it had £5 of talk time included; comparatively Vodaphone was (at that time) selling a prepaid connection at £20 with £2 worth talk time only.

Prepaid is a good way of controlling the cost of cell charges.
