I was burning Interview with a Vampire and i was wondering if i just take the DTS 5.1 Audio track(in order to keep movie at better quality) will you still hear audio if you play it in a normal DVD player without a Reciever and just running it through the sound of the built in TV speakers?

it won't work, U won't be able to decode the DTS soundtrack.
unless your TV can handle DTS.........

So I won't hear ANY sound from my TV with just the DTS audio track? So I basically need to always keep the AC3 2-ch English audio track with all movies that I rip in order to hear them on a Standard TV DVD setup?

DTS will only work through the digital (coaxial-optical) output, where 5.1 - AC-3 will work through both the digital output & the standard R/L outputs.....
-
So is it wise to just keep the AC3 5.1-ch and DTS 5.1-ch on movies and not worry about keeping the AC3 2-ch track because the AC3 5.1-ch track does the same thing for a normal tv dvd setup with no reciever? I appreciate the help.

Well, you can just keep the 5.1 as it will work both ways, DTS takes up more space than the 5.1 soundtrack, which will give more space to the video as that is what is compressed & not the audio. Unless you like the DTS audio better. or you can keep both the DTS and 5.1, the 2ch. is usually just commentary or something.....Originally Posted by pantherman85
I usually just keep the DTS but all my systems throughout the house are all digital & i don't have to worry about it and i prefer the DTS to 5.1 anyways.... -
Some DVD players can decode DTS,I would only keep the AC3 5.1ch if your player can't decode and you don't have a HT receiver.

Question for Noahtuck: Let me get this straight then. The AC3 5.1-ch will put out the same sound as AC3 2-ch will on a DVD TV setup with no reciever? And what if you had a reciever that was dolby digital but not 5.1, would the AC3 5.1-ch be as good for it as the AC3 2-ch? I guess im asking if the AC3 5.1-ch just kicks back to AC3 2-ch when not played on a 5.1 reciever?

Okay, first off, if there is a 2ch audio on the dvd AND 5.1, the 2ch you are seeing in shrink is prob. just directors comentary or the like.Originally Posted by pantherman85
The 5.1 will play through the L/R phono jack outputs on the dvd player & into a TV with Audio/Video inputs, it will only be stereo of course, if you then hook it up through the digital connection to a DD/DTS rec. it will also play that way. 5.1 is the most universal audio. so if you are not a big DTS fan you could burn it with just the 5.1 and it will play anyway you want to hook it up.
Yes! -
And DVD-/+R's are cheap enough, you can buy 50 packs on sale on a regular basis for $20.00.... try one with just 5.1 and see what you think runing it directly into a tv with just the L/R outputs on the player....

Your DVD player will downmix a 5.1 AC3 track to a stereo track on the fly to output through the phono jacks. You will only ever get stereo or pro-logic out of these. If your player can't decode DTS and output it as 6 seperate channels (one for each speaker) then you need an amp with a digital (optical or coax) connection and a DTS encoder. It is possible to have a disk with a DTS only audio track, although some players will not accept it because it is not strictly within the spec (first audio track must be LPCM or AC3 to strictly comply - mp2 is also acceptable in PAL countries).
