  1. I hope someone here can tell me where I'm going wrong:
using the Radeon 64 VIVO and the ATI multimedia "video IN" software I cannot capture in anything other than AVI format! In avi format a 3 min clip at 640X480 = 3+ gig file! (a chopy video at that. Reducing to 320X240 gives a 800MB file and a little smoother) Also, I'd eventually like to generate an VCD so I've got to have the mpg capture format working. If I press the record button after choosing anything other than an avi file type NOTHING happens!
I have the latest ATI drivers 4.13.7075 and multimedia player 7.1, latest directX 8 and the Video Capture Update for DirectX 8.0, and the DVD player works fine. Also, if relevent the PC is 1gig PIII, 512MB RAM, 6 GIG free on 7200RPM ATA100 drive.
Hope you can show mw the light...

  2. Try installing the ATI DVD player version 4.1 that you can download from the ATI site. If your ATI DVD player says version 7.1 when you start it is actually older than the 4.1 version (go figure). I have heard that installing the latest version of the ATI DVD player (4.1) solves alot of capture problems.

    Good luck!

    edit-

Also you might try defragging your hard drive.

  4. alls well that ens well....
for what it's worth, and for the sake of anyone doing a search on this particular problem and finding this thread, the problem was solved after a COMPLETE uninstall of all ATI related software and drivers, manual removal of ATI related enteries in the registry and a subsequent *clean* reinstal of ATI drivers/software. It seems if you have installed the software bundle off of the CD you must completely remove it prior to installing the newer stuff downloaded from the ATI site.
BTW, I didn't figure this out on my own. Resorted on calling the ATI support number. Call was answered on first ring and I received competent and pleasent help from tech support. All fixed while I was on the phone <15 minutes! (how often can you say that?)
Thanks to James at ATI tech support.
