  1. Hello,

I hope this is the correct place to put this topic! videohelp.com is awesome!

    Anyway, here's the deal:

I have an external LaCie firewire enclosure with a LiteOn LTR-48246S cd burner in it. I bought a LiteOn SOHW-1633S DVD burner and tried to replace the cd burner with the dvd burner. There seems to be no power or response from the DVD burner when I turn on the enclosure. Here is what I have checked:

The DVD burner works just fine in my PC tower (I don't want it in there because I want to use my mac instead). After trying it without luck in the external case, I reinstalled the CD burner in the case and it worked fine again, so I didn't break anything. Also, I reinstalled the DVD burner in the PC, and it worked fine, so it's not broken either. The cd burner was set to 'master' (I don't know much about this). I set the DVD burner to master as well - I also tried slave and cable switch - no luck.

In addition, I bought a LiteOn SOHR-5238S cd burner, and that works fine in the enclosure (set to master).

I've made sure that the cables are in firmly and all.

Is there a compatibility issue here, or is it a setting, or is comething broken? Is my enclosure for cd burners only (if so, why? I thought IDE was always the same?)? As far as I know, this is not true. I believe the enclosure came with the cd burner in it, because that is how the enclosure is labeled. I got it used and it's been working great for about a year now.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

Strange. No, it should at least light up and move the tray.

Master is generally the correct setting for external drives. About the only difference between DVD drives and CD drives are some newer DVD drives need the 80 conductor cable (Inside the external drive), but they will still work at a slower speed.

My external DVD drive opens the tray and the light flashes even without the Firewire cable connected. Gotta be something simple, just don't know what.

  3. Do you think LaCie or Liteon support would help me solve this problem? Does it sound like something's broken?

    Thank you mucho!

  4. I updated the firmmware on my PC and that didn't do anything (I have no idea about this sort of thing). : > sorry to bump, it will be the last time, but I am really stumped, and longing to use my new burner. Anybody have any ideas? If so, I would be oh-so grateful.

I tried a generic USB/Firewire enclosure briefly last year.
I also set my DVD burner to master. And everything worked fine.

It is strange that the tray on your enclosure doesn't work when the enclosure is powered up without the Firewire cable attached because the power to the DVD burner comes from the power connector not the Firewire cable.

It seems to me you've done everything right.

Before returning your DVD drive, how about buying a different enclosure?
If there is a CompUSA nearby, they sell them $45.
I bought mine from Dealsonic $40.
