Can someone tell me why I would make a backup copy of my DVDs? Is it just in case something happens to my storebought copy?

Why would you make a backup copy of anything?

My main reason is my kids. They have a way of scratching and breaking the dvd's.

  8. I make backup copies to use in my portable player to keep my originals from being scratch like I've done for years with CDs to play in the car while the original was safe at home. MPAA and RIAA need not worry, I purchased the originals, never use the original and backup at the same time and never have given away a backup, sold a backup or anything like that.

Having said all of that though. DVD backups to me are not copies. Since they have to be transcoded and aren't 1:1 bit perfect I prefer purchasing and playing originals only.
