  1. I actually really like NERO, never had a problem with the software until now.
I think I have narrowed down to why the problem happens, though I do not know why or really how to fix it.
When I copy a dvd I go straight to burning rom, bypassing the start smart menu. This way always works great. For what ever reason it seems if I go to copy a dvd through start smart menu, my burn button is grayed out and my dvd rom no longer reads anything, no matter what I am trying to do with the drive. It will not read any type of disc.
    2 things I know

    1. not bad media (seems to be the favorite response around here)
    2. not a bad drive.

This same exact problem is happening on my parents computer when they try and copy dvds with nero, so I know my rom isnt bad.
I reistalled nero and restarted my PC and everything works again.
But my parents PC will not work agian using that remedy.
Has anyone had this problem? any ideas on the cause? any fixes know
    TIA

Are you running SP2? If you are, did you download the update to Nero that was supposed to correct the compatibility issues with SP2? Other than that, the only advice I can give: Don't use smart start.

Sounds like the drive is being locked and not released.

Remove the drive from device manager and reboot.

  5. Okay got it figured out for the most part.

    1. I will just stay away from smart start menu with Nero. Why this locks up my drive I do not know, but it is working now and I am happy.

    2. I showed my parents how to use Dvd Shrink and I think they werent doing it right, because when I tried to copy a disc I had made it worked fine. Thier drive wouldn't even recognize the discs they made with shrink. What they did I dont know yet, but I am sure it is easily fixed.

    Thanks for the responses.
