I've read a lot about editing video and conventional wisdom says that you capture the video as an .AVI, perform all editing and other processing to the .AVI, and then send the file to an MPEG encoder. I've read about lots of people actually capturing MPEG video and editing it. Is this good for quality's sake? I've read that serious video editing shouldn't be done to MPEG video. Bottom line is it safe to edit MPEG video or is it better to perform the old .AVI edit/then encode to MPEG? Thanks!

  2. It's easier to Edit MPEG because it is smaller, however, it is compressed, AVI is not as compressed and you are dealing with a higher quality source, and that is always better, which is why the professionals will always prefer it, however, you do need a very strong machine, cause AVI sizes can be 2gb or 4gb or more.

Virtual Dub, & Adobe Premiere can edit mpeg1 files.

    For mpeg2
You can use DVD2AVI to make a project file, than VFAPI to create an AVI from that. Or use mpeg2dec to create an avs file to load into Virtual Dub.

Avi Utilities can load .d2v files directly. Get it here http://ruriruri.zone.ne.jp/aviutl/
