For some reason, any standalone MPEG converter I try will not open (and therefore won't convert) any of the DV-AVI files that I transfer via firewire from my MiniDV camera. The only encoders that work are the ones that plug into Adobe Premiere. There are a few good encoders that plugin, but I'm missing out on a lot of supposedly good standalone encoders to try, so I'd like to fix this if I can. Is there some sort of codec or something I need? These files play fine, and Premiere has no trouble converting them (even with plugins).. But the standalone converters (such as Panasonic MPEG Encoder 2.51. The standalone version does not work, but the 2.51 Plugin version works.)
Sorry for the rambling, I think everybody gets my problem. Anybody know how to fix it? Thanks a lot.

Hi,
There's a sort of simple answer but it involves money.
Buy Mainconcepts DV codec. I have it and it allows encoding / reencoding of DV Avi's and also capture from an anologue capture card straight into the DV codec. Also opening in any other applications.
The trouble with microsofts DV codec is that it only exist when capturing from a firewire source I believe it might be a directshow filter.
