  1. Hello all:

Does anyone know of a way to convert from .avi to .mpeg WITHOUT altering the content/quality of the .avi?

I do not mind the fact that i would need ALOT of Cd's to make a VCD; the issue i'm having is a HUGE amount of pixelation in the converstion (i'm using both TMPEGENC and XINGTECH).

    Thanks

    Joe

    You wanna WHAT!!!!!!!

MPEG is a compression codec plain and simple.
Any conversion from raw .AVI (i assume not Divx) to ,say Mpeg2, will result is 'data' loss.

You best solution, if you wish to preserve quality of original is to reincode in MPEG2 at a constant bitrate between 6 to 9 MB/sec. The higher the better of course. Do some tests to see if you can see any difference.

What is the original source material??? This will impact the decision for the compression codec to use.

For my (PAL)home VHS video i capture at 384*576*25fps then encode MPEG1 at 384*288 at a CQ bitrate of 2400 in TMPEGEnc.
This seems to be the sweet spot for MPEG1. MPEG2 at this bitrate is worse (this will start a few arguements) due to way it encodes. I now have master disks and can if i wish later make standard VCD.

If you want to make standard VCD then tough . YOU WILL GET PIXELATION. Try perhaps (X)VCD if your standalone DVD will support it.

  3. I'm assuming that you want to transcode an encoded avi file to mpeg. Unfortunately as they use different compression methods you do have to re-encode.

However to solve pixellation try adding smoothing filters (temporal and spatial), incresing bitrate of your target file and adding macroblock smoothers.

Note if your going from a divX the quality will not be very good, unfirtunate I know but it just seems to be the way it is.

  4. Thanks for the help...
    This should get me started...
I'm getting a new situation with conversion (but that will be another topic post!)
