  1. I've had the unit for just 2 weeks. Mine was made in Sept.2004.
    Two concerns:

    1. The sound drops out on some recordings. I've noticed it happens around every 2 minutes and thirty seconds. I've used two different dvd-r brands, one a 8x and one 4x. So I know its not the media. The same recordings will play without sound drop outs on my five year old JVC player.

    2. Some of my burned movies/recordings will slightly pause during playback, and cause the unit make a sound like a fan has just kick on.

Anyone else have these problems ?

I am on my third liteon 5007. It looks like this one is working right. When I exchanged it I got the extended warranty because I dont think these can work for 2 years. The issue you are having is the same that I had on playing the dvd+r's I recorded on my liteon and played in a brand new Sony that plays dvd+r's. I exchanged the Sony and they work good now.

    Have you updated your firmware?
    George

  4. No, I have not updated the firmware.
I'm not sure if that would help. I emailed Liteon on the same day I posted here. No response from Liteon as of yet.
I now have noticed a humming sound when using the TV tuner. I really want to like this unit, I love my Liteon dvd burner, but these problems are bad.

  5. Hello Pinetop, et al,
Playing it back from Recorder is OK BUT NOT from most DVD players --- I've tested on 4 different players I got.

Yes, that's the problem of LiteOn LVW5005 with LNFA1091 Firmware. I bought 3 times and returned during Sept, Oct & Nov. 2004 and finally my 4th one in Dec Manufactured date Oct. 2004 using latest Firmware LNFA1098 were good & perfect this time.

Even with latest System Firmware I still needs to upgraded Drive Firmware LNFA1000 in order to played all 4 DVD Players.

  6. Hi
I just bought LVW-5005 from Costco in San Francisco.
When I create NTSC DVD from PAL tape, the all images are narrow and tall, like squeezed.
    I have latest firmware, 0098.

Is there any hack or trick to fix this?

Instead of squeeze the video, why they just cut little from top and bottom when converting to NTSC?

I've heard PAL hack. What is PAL hack? does it help me on this problem?
    thank you all,

  7. I have the NTSC 5005 and it works perfectly..It is hacked for 3 hr mode, Macrovision disabled and all region... My problem is that when I make a DVD, even with the option for protection set to off, I cannot make backups of the DVD. Has anyone else had this problem? It used to work fine, maybe the hack changed something? any help?

  8. Its Junk !

    *TV tuner hums

    *mono recordings

    *faded picture

    *shaking picture at times

    *Its loud !

  9. You forgot...

*Still has too much green tint on darker scenes, even with latest firmware

*Pauses, and has some audio dropouts

*The 4 hour mode PQ is terrible, worse than VHS 6 hr mode (as copied from a satellite TiVo recording)

Mine is heading back to Costco. I may return to my Pinnacle/PC capture/burn routine. It's way slower to do, but far outpaces this machine in picture quality. I'm not sure these DVD recorders are ready for me yet.

  10. So instead of bashing it, what's another good DVD recorder that is able to have the Macrovision disabled???

  11. "Bashing it" seems harsh. Negative feedback is more like it.
How bad do you need macrovision defeated? Sima makes an inline device that works great. If you have a DVD burner in your PC, there are some free programs out there that will copy a DVD for you. What good is defeating macrovision to copy something when the end result is simply a new set of problems that renders the copy just as unviewable as a macrovision copy?
I guess if you're relying on a "hack" to get something done, then quality is going to suffer. Some of the higher rated machines with better PQ reports have no "hacks". Only the margial quality machines seem to have this "feature".
I use DVD Xcopy for DVD backups on the PC. I have no macrovison VHS to worry about, so I don't need any hacks personally. I picked the 5005 up to see for myself where the quality was in relation to using other sources. And it doesn't match up....at all.

  12. Oh definetely, for DVDs, programs like DVD Dhrink and DVD Decrypter are my best friends... I do however have MANY VHS tapes to Backup. I have a Capture Device (ADS Instant DVD) and it works great, but I was looking to streamline the process...

  13. If your looking to copy macro VHS tapes. Who cares ?

Get Nero, shrink, and a blockbuster pass and make yourself some good dvd copies.

If its an old or rare VHS tape it may not have macro. Plus theres ways around macro protection, due a search on this forum.

At the end of the day:

Liteon DVD recorders are junk !
