  1. When I try to encode a .rm (realmedia without video in this case) to an mp3 file, I get an error, that is plain gobbledygook to me (see attached jpg for a screenshot of the dialog). What is the cause of this? Am I doing something wrong?

PS: This is using the latest version of ffmpegX and the 'stable' version of reallib as linked to on ffmpegX's homepage (the one that is downloaded from sourceforge).
Also, I just chose the "audio file to mp3" preset option on the right hand side of the pane in the picture. I did tweak the audio options in the audio tab, but I didn't chose anything that is not visible here (I just lowered the frequency and upped the bitrate). I also get the error when I chose "movie audio to mp3".

I too am unable to encode Real media audio-only files into a usuable (non-real) audio format (mp3,pcm,etc). I do not get the error sited by Thunderkopf in his posting however. Instead, I the program reports "finished" status of the encoding, but the process information shows the following:

Encoding started on Sun May 22 11:12:45 HST 2005
    Unsupported video codec
    [NULL @ 0x381324]Unsupported video codec
    Input #0, rm, from '/Volumes/1495gb removable/winkprat real media/rm/2000MESSAGES/RESTFROMOPPRESSION.RM':
    Duration: 00:52:55.7, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 49 kb/s
    Stream #0.0: Data: 0x0000
    Stream #0.1: Data: 0x0000, 16 kb/s
    Stream #0.2: Audio: sipr, 16000 Hz, mono, 16 kb/s
    Stream #0.3: Audio: sipr, 8000 Hz, mono, 8 kb/s
    Stream #0.4: Audio: sipr, 8000 Hz, mono, 6 kb/s
    Stream #0.5: Audio: sipr, 16000 Hz, mono, 16 kb/s
    Stream #0.6: Audio: sipr, 16000 Hz, mono, 16 kb/s
Codec type mismatch for mapping #0.0 -> #0.0

since the file has multiple audio streams, I tried selecting a different stream to encode, and also lowering the bit rate and khz to source to try to make it easier for the conversion. I get this process information and a "failed"status.

the program clearly can "play" the audio file, but the reencoding seems to be hung up somehow. I tried using the latest and the "stable" Helix Real drivers, with the same results.

This is a wonderful app, but it would be nice if it worked on Real Media audio streams, and perhaps incorporate some of the features of the 'sox' utility for audio only streams (http://sox.sourceforge.net/). conversely, perhaps the sox team could incorporate support for the real audio format based on how ffmpeg did with the helix drivers?

Thanks. Hope there is an easy solution to fixing this.

I just installed all the parts for ffmegX and tried a Real music video as a test and it failed completely. When I dragged the file to the box and previewed it would play the video without sound. The recode made almost a zero byte file.

The boxes below the drop show "no video" and "no audio."

Audio recode alone isn't what I was looking for anyway. I can play a Real audio and capture it as an aiff with freeware Wiretap. The aiff is acceptable to iMovie.

I just got it fixed. The RealLib in the first link must not be "stable" I followed the other link for the last stable version and now problem solved, sort of.

Now the recode won't work in QT, but the QT lib isn't on the Apple page following the link. I'll have to get the QT lib from somewhere else.
