I am a newbie to video editing, but I wanted to share my solution to the muxing error “Video Buffer Underflow”.
Note that I’m dealing with VCD streams.
When trying to mux using TMPGEnc, I was experiencing video buffer underflow. All the settings were correct, however on a 1 minute clip, I was experiencing between 5 and 50 video underflows. The mpg’s would usually play on my computer but not on my DVD. Someone on this site suggested using TMPGEnc for demuxing only. They said try bbMPEG so I downloaded the latest version of bbMPEG and it did a great job solving the problem. Here’s what I did:
1. Load bbMPEG and click on the “Start Encoding” button.
2. Click on “Settings”.
3. Click on the tab “Inputs and Outputs”.
4. Click on Open PS, Open VS and Open AS 1 and type in the file name (to be saved), and select the video and audio files.
5. Click on the tab “Program Stream Settings”. Select the appropriate “Program Stream Type” and note the other standard settings.
6. Click OK.
7. Click Start.
8. The message window will tell you if your initial try at muxing was successful.
9. If you weren’t successful, bbMPEG tells you to either decrease the video rate or increase the video and audio startup delays.
10. I wasn’t crazy about decreasing video rate, so I first started by bumping up the video and audio startup delays, clicking OK and clicking Start again.
11. The first try helped a bit but I still had a few video buffer underflow errors.
12. Next I started bumping the video and audio buffer sizes incrementally and muxing again.
13. After several tries, I finally found the right buffer size and startup delay combination to avoid the dreaded “Video Buffer Underflow”.
Bottom line answer is to get bbMPEG and avoid using TMPGEnc to do any muxing.
