    hi people,

I've looked everywhere on this site for clues on DVD ripping. I actually came out with good results and a bunch of softwares that seem to be useful.

    TASK:

I need to Re edit DVD files on Premiere Pro 1.5.

To do that: I ripped to VOB using Smartripper. I then used VOBEDIT to make an MPEG Stream file.

Question: Is there any other free software that I can use to Convert VOB files to MPEG2?

    The More important Question:

I Tried to import the MPEG File converted by VOBEDIT, but Premeire PRO crashes whenever I intend to import it for timeline usage. Although Premiere SHOULD import MPEG files as it says in the HELP files. Any idea why MPEGs arent being imported?

God knows I've been all over this place to figure it out..so somebody...please throw me a bone!

    Cheers,

    VERVE

thanx for the link...but I did say clearly that i've tried those and that I DID convert to MPEG. MY CONCERN was why the Premiere PRO crashes when i import it. and if there is another way i can convert to MPEG2

Please re read my Enquiry. You misunderstood my request.

    Cheers,

  3. I dont dont how VOBEDIT works. But if you now have the Mpg2 file try to De-mux it then re-mux it back or Import them as Elementary Streams.

    Okay kiddo, here it goes.....

Premiere isn't an Mpeg editor, rather an .AVI editor..Don't know where you read that..
There's a plugin that Mainconcept sells for $250 that lets you import Mpeg files and edit, but i can't answer for it's success..

Personally, the easiest way to do it, is through DVD Decryptor. It lets you demux a .VOB into an Mpeg, elementary stream, or a toaster oven..
I'll let you do your own research on that..

Secondly, import the .MPEG into VirtualDubMpeg (which recognizes Mpeg files and is free), and uncompress the Video portion that you want, with a DV codec (like Panasonic), while saving out the .AC3 audio into a .WAV..

Import the newly created .AVI, and .WAV file into Premiere, and edit to your hearts content..

    Clear as mud??

    Got a much quicker way..
I use VIDOMI...This produces an AVI with the AC3 converted to PCM
right in the stream. There are no seperates here

So, I load VIDOMI with the .VOB's I want
VIDOMI will fuse .VOB's of like characteristics

I end up with a huge AVI file (IT CAN BE IN ANY CODEC THAT I PLEASE, the only requirement is that this codec show up on the timeline in PREMIERE)

This give me a choice of 8 or so codecs.
I usually go with MICROSOFT V8 or DIVX 4
I run a bitrate higher than the resultant file needs to be in PREMIERE

This is , If the DVD had a VBR around 6 million bits I will make a 6million bit per sec MPEG-4
that can be edited to a MPEG-2 output file of 5million bits average in PREM PRO

    Pijetro my dear,

ur help was based on how to convert vob to avi..which is exactly what I'm trying to avoid since AVI files are a nightmare to the HD and time in general.

what u proposed..I already know. as for what u said regarding MPEG..u asked where i read that...easy: go to HELP files in Premiere pro 1.5..select import media pop up...and see the MPEG there under IMPORT

    thanx for the help though!

If you need to import the MPEG, try resaving the .VOB or .MPG in
MPEG2VCR by Womble first. This can do the Ac3 conversion necessary as PREMIRE PRO may handle some MPEG, but not Ac3

I have also used a product called MPEG MARVEL (china)
this is supposed to install first and allow Premiere 6 or 6.5 to import MPEG and understand AC3
Its a pricey product tho' and only worked on half the stuff I threw at it
(in adddition to requiring a USB dongle)

Unfortunately, neither is free and one only works on Prem 6x and lower!

  8. When you say you are importing mpg, are you using that term interchangably with mpg2? I am trying to understand the lingo on this site and never know if people are using mpg generically or not.

pijetro gave you good advice, you just don't want to take it.

Allthough Premiere Pro can import Mpeg files, it isn't designed to edit them. For that, you'll need a 3rd party plugin like MainConcept Mpeg Pro. They have a 30 day free trial you can download to try out. I've used it before, it it works great.

Or you can convert the Mpeg into a codec that Premiere Pro will edit. Those are your choices, you decide.

Does Mpeg Pro from MainConcept handle Ac3 import in the process of making Pro understand the MPEG imported?

I've never tried to import the ac3, I always demuxed the Vob to m2v and converted the ac3 to wav. With m2v and wav in the timeline, it works quite well.

I normally don't edit Mpegs, but I did have to re-edit some DVDs I made and don't have the project files for anymore.

    Premiere never understands AC3, no.

AC3 and MPEG are NOT intended for editing.
    That's the primary problem here.

I have LSX MPEG Encoder engine from and old Premiere I've had for years, and that still to this day let's me use it with Premiere 6.5. Yes, the encoder installed system wide codecs, including Premiere import codecs. Very nice.

    Verve,
I was under the impression that you were editing sample clips..Even so, if you were to uncompress to DV, it should stilll fit your harddrive ..

Although i stick to my original posting, what i've done in the past, is use DVD2AVI, and frameserve to Premiere 6.5 with AVISynth.

Unfortunately, i don't know anybody who's using AVISynth with Premiere, since the Pro version came out...

I know what you want, but am guessing the only way to do it is through some pretty expensive, and dedicated Mpeg editing hardware..
