Organ donation...or kinda...

I don't know much about medical stuff...but what are the chances of someone being a match for bone marrow transplants. I figure if the chances are high or low I would go in anyway...I just wondered if anyone knew the chances of me being a donor for someone being of some help to another.

I've donated blood...but mine is common among people...just wanna make SOME kinda difference...I'm drunk!!

You may want to wait for that to wear off before try to you donate anything.

By drunk I mean I've had a couple and just started thinking...thought about lots of things, and one of them was cancer (Hate to bring the mood down)...anyway, I know people donate enough blood (My type is common) but I wondered about bone marrow...how common or uncommon it might be...I'm good now...just thinking...

If you're really up for it, talk to your physician. He'll probably already have all the info he needs to find out if you're fairly compatible. If not, I'm sure he won't mind running the tests. Someone you know get cancer recently or did this just come out of the blue?

What I think happens is that a sample will be taken initially for typing for histocompatibility. Then, if somebody in the future needs bone marrow and you are found to be compatible, they will ask you if you want to donate.

It is not a simple process like blood donation.

There is probably a decent chance of it being compatible if it's from a realtive, and if you have a lot of realtives. Otherwise it takes a large pool of unrelated people, preforably from your particular ethnic group (not just race).

From my own experiences this is something you don't want to do unless its someone close to you and neccessary.

Funny enough, I said something to my wife about a friend of mine in Japan needing an organ donation and she says "so what are you thinking? You wanting to donate your organ to his girlfriend until he can perform again?"

Dammit I hate it when she knows me that well and she's so sarcastic and cynical.
