  1. This might not be a typical question for this forum, but hopefully someone can help anyway.

I am using the Mask Shape tool to create an elliptical mask around the frame of my video, so the corners of the picture are just blacked out.

I'm using the Mask Feather tool to blur it so it looks natural, but... something is funky. When I adjust the feather bar to 100%, it looks perfect... the gradient is really smooth:

    Mask Feather: before rendering

After I render the clip, however, the mask feather doesn't quite look the same. The gradient is nowhere near as smooth.

    What's going on?

Doncha hate it when no one answers your question?

I couldn't begin to know the answer to your FCP issue, but when I have FCP questions, I try the forums at www.2-pop.com. Hope this helps.

Your post will usually get a quick response.
    Good luck!

I wonder if it is a "Safe/RT" issue see:

  6. That looks to me like the mask is rendering with a limited color palette (something like 256 values, verses your preview which is probably millions). Perhaps this is a limit in the masking feature of FCP?
