  1. I have a DVD that a friend made from a video tape of a party. I need to make another copy but for some reason the disk has errors on it and I am having a hell of a time copying it. It plays fine in a stand alone and PC player, but the ripper finds errors. DVDshrink found errors also.

The video runs about hour long, so rather than go nuts I figure I would connect a portable DVD player to my 5005 recorder, using s-video, and solve the problem that way.

My question is: Will there be a genration loss like with VHS tape?
I can always hook up a TBC to keep the quality better, but is it necessary?

    Thanks.

    Hello,

Yeah I had a homemade disc that wasn't ripping well also.

Since it's homemade no macrovision so no need for the tbc for that reason. But I don't think the generation loss effect will be present for the dvd copying. I've done a few dvd to dvd transfers via my hauppage wintv pvr 250 and they look OUTSTANDING. You should be pleased with it.

  3. Dvd recorders detect macrovision too....

Try dvddecrypter on it, it has a new version that does the new copy protections.

    Hello,

He said it was homemade so there will be no macrovision in it.

  5. Yeah it's a home made DVD from a personal camcorder taken at a retirement party. Runs about an hour and a half. So no encryption, no MV, etc.

Anyways, hooked up the portable to the lvw-5005 tonight and gave it a go. Quality is great. About exactly like the original. I just went straight
s-video in without any TB or processor.

    Thanks all for the input.

    Regards.

"Generation Loss" on a VCR is due more to the loss introduced by the analogue read heads and less to the the signal cables involved.

The only loss happening is the Digital->Analogue->Digital occuring in the signal area between the two units. And using a good S-Video cable on camcorder-quality material that loss should be minimal, although certainly component would be even more minimal.

  7. If you still want to rip the DVD to the computer try ISobuster.

  8. Even with no encryption you could still try DD. Worth a shot.

  9. Actually I had tried first dvdshrink and it stopped when it hit errors.
Then I tried dvddecrypter and it paused on the errors waiting for my decision. First try I told it to retry on errors. It took about 4 hours and the resulting files could'nt be used (Nero and DVDLab gave errors).
Tried it again this time telling it to ignore errors. Took two hours and the resulting files had parts missing.
Finally I figured I wasted 6+ hours trying to copy a 1.5 hour DVD so I came up with the idea of just copying it with a player and a burner.
    That worked.
Just for giggles last night after the sucessful copy I copied the new disk with DVDshrink and DVD Decrypter and the results were both fine.
My guess is the original has something wrong with the media.

  10. couldn't you have just copied the ts_video folder to the HD and burn it with Nero.

  11. Ya' know, that thought never occured to me.

I did try that just now though to see and again there was an "error copying inpage destination" on one of the VOBs.
