Try the philips dvp642 and if you dont like it , then there is nothing out here for you.

    Oh yeah, your quote "
    crapest piece of junk
is kind of funny. Would you be happier if it was the best piece of junk? In short, since you included 2 negatives, then that makes it a positive, ergo you really do like the Philips.

    I farted.

  3. philips is the most hated dvd player of all the boards go read...... lol

    (it skips............)
    #2 it overscans files...

#3 makes the viewing look like crap

#4 no one wants to watch a movie that skips every 20 mins...........

#5 Yesh (it's a + for the philips cause it keeps his word on the box saying it plays divx it never guaranteed that it plays them completly lol)

#6 worst service on the phone too.

#7 had a pleasure trowing it out of my window (i have a video file of it too)
it breaks like a charm + i got it re-emboursed
    didn't lost a penny breaking it^_^

I have one. It is great. If it does not play some Divs or Xvid is because the conversion/burning/media truly sucks. Otherwize iit plays extremely well at least for me. Try to play crappy converted "Internet" obtained material and it is no wonder you and others may be having problems. I have made convertions to divs with Dr. Divix and they play outstanding, in fact I'm amazed how good a 700mb divx can look. I don;t do that any more since it is do easy and cheap to back up your DVDs to DVD/r
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!

  6. speaking from experience, i tried Numerous DVD players and they all sucked with anything other than DVD's.

Then one day i saw a weekly list of sale items that our local Netto store was having and low and behold there was this DVD player which had DIVX built in.

It was made by a company called Targa and the Model is DP-5100X, and was also a reasonable price for £59.00, so i bought one.

well to cut a long story short, it's played everything i've thrown at it, including AVI. and uncoded MPEG files.

good luck in your search for this animal, cause i've never seen it since.

    hayabusa,

I agree with you, the 642 is junk. Bought one and brought it back the same day. Even store bought DVD's did not look very good.

I would do as lordsmurf suggested and look here https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers

The 642 is the best bet for now. You will find and read from more people that have had problems with this player than from people that have not had problems with it. it is simple really..... people that dont have any problems with this unit, do not come online to say they dont have problems... in other words, if it works as advertised then thats normal and u dont advertise normal. It is only when things go tango uniform that u hear people screaming and descibing this unit so eloquently as "junk and crap".

It plays most divx files except for the qpels of course. all -R +R kvcd vcd svcd yada ayada yada. It is pretty good for the most part. there are screwy things about it that bogles the mind tho. FF is the right button and not the normaly associated -> button. plus the speed up only goes to 8x. I find myself sometimes going to ff and only to find that I hit the "NEXT" button.. which on almost every other dvd player is the FF.

    I'm tired.

  16. I agree that the DVP 642 is far from perfect, but it still does the basic job it was designed to do.
They could improve the remote, give us better options and control over the zoom mode, emulate overscan and all.

But it still performs quite well for its price.

  17. yes i agree on this .... at least for the pricing i didn't have no other choice

    What about the RJ-1500DVXII ???

    Hey there,

I am "fairly" happy with my 642 but have to agree, the pressed DVD playback just sucks. The luminance on my is never close to right, at least not on mine, no matter how you tweak it.

Now I know some people hate the A word but APEX will have a player out this month that does both Divx/Xvid and NERO DIGITAL standard profile playback that sounds very promising. They will also have versions that are networkable and with PVR and DVD-+R recorders in the coming weeks. From what I have read they will NOT do Divx/Xvid or Nero RECORDING though.

I actually have been pretty happy with past Apexs for what they were. Cheap!!

    Hope this helps,
    Mike

Really looking forward to the Nero Digital playback.

You may want to check out the Vsonic 9900. It plays Mpeg 4,Divx,Xvid,supports SRT subs, and has an AEC chip. About $10 dollars more than the Philips. Only sold in Canada, under the Vsonic label. I have their 9200 player, and it's excellent.

  20. I've been using the RjTech 250PDVX for over a month now and would cautiously recommend it. My first one died after 2 weeks, but they promptly replaced it. It plays just about everything except for a few SVCD disks it won't recognize. Don't know why. It will not shuffle MP3 file over a whole disk which my older player will do. It plays most DIVX 3/4/5 Xvid files but a very few don't work. I think these have ogg Vobis soundtracks which the player doesn't support. Also it is not as cheap as some DIVX players, but it is much smaller and portable.

  21. it seems that ALL divx players on the market have problems with skipping & jumping, sound sync etc on some files. The hardwares just not that advanced at the mo.

the reason theres so many posts about philips is that so many people have one, its one of the few machines you don't have to mail order, and its cheap! you could spensd twice as much but you'd still get problems, but at least philips is well documented and theres plenty of ways around a lot of them, especially if you rip & burn your own files.

my advise is, ok you've tried philips & don't like it, but if you can wait six months-year, do so, as machines will be a lot better then. If not get another cheapo machine & put up with it until theres something better to upgrade to.

I got two Divx players: Lite-on 2001 and Newly purchased RJ-800DVX. I like RJ-800DVX better. It's got a cheap look and feel but the features it's got are uncomparable. The latest MTK chipset it's got has GMC and QPEL support. The player has SCART and VGA supports as well. I have only had it for about a week now but no problem so far.

Picture quality of DIVX is better than that of Lite-on 2001.

Check this link to find out its features.

I have a 642 and I'm pretty disappointed with it. It sometimes freezes on commercial DVDs, often on burned copies, sometimes a lot, even though they play fine on my computer (Plextor). I haven't even tried DivX yet, as I don't normally care about them. It does do SVCD that my old Apex wouldn't handle.

My Philips is only 2 months old, so maybe I can do something about it. The problem is, it doesn't always screw up, so they might check it and say it's fine.

Heard a lot of people say this about the Philips and store-bought DVD's. I must have bad eyesight or something, because quality of regular DVD's looks excellent to me. I use the S-Video out on mine, maybe it's some of the other outputs that look crappy.

It's deviating a little from the original post, but I would advise caution with any new Apex model. I bought 2 old Apex models and they were fine. However, Apex does have a bad reputation for bringing some models out before they are really ready. Their combo SACD/DVD-Audio player was an unmitigated disaster. Also, it seems that Apex has been recently making models that can't be firmware hacked, which makes them less useful to people who want to use them to watch DVDs from other regions.

I have the DVP-642 and it looks fine to me too. Maybe some models are crap, some are good. Maybe some people are just more sensitive than others. I work with a guy who is just adamant that 128 Kbps MP3 audio is unlistenable, but the majority of the public would disagree. Maybe there is something about the DVP-642 that certain people are ultrasensitive to.

I also have the phillips DVP-642 and it plays and looks fine. The topic starter spoke of DL movies, well that could be one of your problems. poorly converted movies play bad, skip, and choppy on any thing that it is played on; I wouldn't blame the player for that.

  27. I have the Phillips and I'm very happy with it. Never had a problem with anything downloaded or bought dvds. If you don't like the Phillips, Yamaha has just released a model that does DIVX as well as +/- R media. Can't remember the number but I've seen it online at a few retailers.

  28. Is the Philips 642 still generally considered the best at the moment and for the forseeable future?

I'm am looking to get a DVD/DivX Player, but am willing to wait for a bit if there is something good ont eh horizon.

It look good, I am planning to buy, but I wonder that there is any overscan problem in that. Somebody who has one please tell me. Thanks. I will appreciate it.
