    Hello,

Well I've got a wireless G dlink router and a wireless g no name pc card adapter for my old P2 laptop. Now I can establish a connection with the network. It shows its connected with the little lock icon. (WEP). HOWEVER, I can't access the internet. I can do it if I disable WEP but I want to leave it on for obvious reasons.

I've been experimenting with establishing proxies for the laptop. HOWEVER I don't really know what I'm doing. For the ip on the wireless router menu I put the ip of the laptop. Then I set the port number. I set it for always access the net. What I don't know is how to configure IE5.5 on the laptop to match my wireless router configurations.

Any advice would be appreciated. The weird thing is that it was relatively easy to set up my XBOX G router which talks nicely to the router.

    BUMP!

    Hello,

    So any ideas????

How can I configure IE to read my wireless configuration??? I was able to get it to work when I had WEP off but I lose it when WEP is ON. And actually the last time I tried it with WEP off I think I couldn't get anything....

The laptop has WIN98 on it. I'd prefer to not REINSTALL it and start over... ;( Actually its a P2 300 mhz so I'm not even sure it would be able to run WIN 2000 - which I do have.....

Is there an auto configure program to get browsers to talk to wireless routers????

I just added a Linksys wireless router to my setup. I'll tell you what i did, maybe it might help you. Here's what my original setup is:

D-LINK cable modem -> D-LINK NAT router -> ethernet cables to PCs

I tried and tried to switch the new Linksys router (which also has 4 hard-wired ports in addition to the wireless-G broadcaster)in place of the D-LINK router, but nothing for the life of me could get the Linksys router to talk to the cable modem. I eventually discovered (after calls to the Linksys tech support, and talking to Sanjii, Chakra, and Gupta for 3 hours) that to get it working, I had to connect the Linksys wireless router to a hardwired port on the D-LINK NAT router, so my setup is now this:

D-LINK cable modem -> D-LINK NAT router -> Ethernet cable to Linskys wireless- G and ethernet cables to PCs

The Linksys router is now 192.168.1.1. In the set-up page of the Linksys router, there is a page for the MAC address. None of the MAC addresses of my computers would allow a total connection to be made. I eventually ran IPCONFIG /ALL from a commandline to get the host name of the cable modem, which in my case is ATTBI.COM, and entered that on the setup page of the Linksys. I also discovered that I had to put the MAC address of my D-LINK cable modem into the setup page of the Linksys wireless router, not the MAC address of any of the computers. I also enabled WEP on the LINSKSYS, and it works perfectly now, and each hardwired PC has access, in addition to my Dell lappie with built-in wireless. Hope this can help in some way.

    Hello,

Ok I was able to get my xbox to connect to the wireless routers physical ports via patch cable. I know that works. I also know that the wireless works because my XBOX is hooked up wirelessly.

What I can't get is IE to read my net connection. My config screen for the laptop card has limited input options. It is an airlink wireless cardbus adapter 802.11g 32 bit model

I've been through the software setup of the wireless card many times. I don't believe I can enter the mac address manually. It seems to be auto config only....

    ---------

dell lappie with built in wireless
Ah maybe that's part of the issue. Maybe dell has better built in support than the wifi card I bought....

Anyway thanks for writing. I'm sure I'll be able to get this to work. The odd thing is it did work when security was off but not when it was turned on.....

    Hello,

Thanks for the advice. Though its a P2 laptop so its only able to do USB1. I have a G system so I'd like to keep it all G ( I know I only have lowspeed DSL but I like to keep my options open for file transfers ).

I think I'm getting there - read some posts over in the cnet networking forum. Seems to happen a lot with a wireless router and pc card of different companies....

Oh well - one of these days I'll get it to work

    I gotcha

If you really want to do some fast transfers you can always hook up directly with a laptop and transfer any game in less than 12 min

With my laptop I always hook up directly when I want to transfer a game

Best of success though with your pcmcia card though I hope you can get it up and going correctly
