  1. First, I really need to ask why I have such a hard time searching these forums. I've been searching on the internet for probably more years than some of you are old, and never had so many searches come back blank. I obviously do not have the knack of this site. For instances, if I type in the header of this post, I get no results. Same thing if I reverse it.

I have literally been searching for over 5 hours now trying to find out how I can determine my mpeg file format - YUV or RGB. I ask because one of the tutorials here on using VirtualDubMod to convert MPEG to AVI says to check the appropriate box based upon my file. Great -- but how do I determine which one I have? I'm talking about in the Save As box in the Video section where you choose the Video Mode. I ended up using Full Processing Mode and Uncompressed RGB for the heck of it.

All I want to do is convert the MPEG to AVI so I can edit it in Premiere. When I did open this file in Premiere and check the properties, this is what it said (by the way, when I had ULead MSP do the same thing, the video was only 8 bits with a much smaller file):

I don't even know where I selected 24 bits, or if that was the standard. So, were my settings correct? How can you tell which format (YUV or RGB) the file is?

    Thanks,
    Dobermann
I'm gonna go transcode my dog now.....

Try just the first post in this thread. After some discussion it was agreed that this is how you tell which format it's in and how to encode it.

  3. All MPEG video is encoded in the YUV colorspace, virtually all in YV12 format.

    Some info on colorspace:
