yes you need the CD how else would you load XP.. if you get the upgrade version of XP then you will need to have an existing windows OS disk to qualify for the upgrade price.. 98 2k me etx will all work... you should back up all your work before installing any OS BTW

  3. I think even when you go to Install XP over 98, it will format, will not upgrade,Like going from 98 to 98se.

It gives you the option whether to upgrade to do a new install.

From 98? I didnt think you could do an upgrade,It just formats and installs XP, But going from 98 to 98se would be an upgrade withought formating and deleting files.

You can upgrade from 98, but you cannot upgrade from 95.

If you have windows 95, you must buy the full install version.

The line of thinking is also if you are running 95, your computer is not adequate enough to run XP.

A clean, fresh install is always the preferred way to put XP on your system. It will still ask you to insert your 98 disk for verification.
Back up all your data files you need first. Another point is not all applications and drivers for your 98 OS will be be compatible with XP, so that needs to be kept in mind, too.

  12. I bought the XP upgrade disk (pre-SP2) and it said I had to run the CD from Windows 98. Couldn't run off a floppy boot into DOS.

Perhaps later upgrades are different. That would be better.

I was just quoting Microsoft. They were telling people that were running 95 that they needed the full version. Then they later said that if they were running 95, they needed a new computer.

This is a liscensing issue. Win95 does not qualify for an "Upgrade" pricing to XP. XP Upgrade discs ask for proof of a previous *Qualifiying" microsoft operating system (Win98/2k). The "upgrade" cd's will not allow installation if you can not provide proof (a CD, or previous installation on the computer).

I would advise a full backup (of all important documents) at the least. This is even more so if all your documents are on the C:\ drive with win98.

The best defense against (potential) disaster is to be prepaired.

    Edit:

At the time XP was released, Windows 95 had dropped off the support list, so it was no longer a valid, supported OS.

By far the best results will come froma fresh install. No legacy drivers, no registry crap, just nice and clean. This is not always practical, and thankfully the upgrade is pretty thorough and foolproof. Legacy hardware, such as scanners and parallel port drives, may give you grief.

One of my clients is a school where we upgrade fairly regularly and rarely have major problems.

Sage advive to back everything up though, as there are no gaurantees.
