I just bought this burner and installed it in my computer. Windows XP sees the burner just fine. When I try to use DVDXCOPY using the simple backup, it says to please choose your burner. Then it closes. When I go into the settings, it sees both my dvd-rom and my burner. The burner is highlighted. That is the only place I can find any settings to check. Is there a conflict between this software and my burner, since the burner is new and came out after the software? Basically I am looking for the easiest and fastest way to backup a dvd. My parents have the same software and an LG burner (4040b I believe, but not sure) and they click on simple, and it asks a couple questions and in 45 minutes they have a backup. Using dvdshrink along with nero to try making a backup, it said it was going to take around 4 hours. Any ideas of a better and faster way, or a way to get dvdxcopy to work with my burner??? Please help.
    Thanks!

Figured it out myself, it was a really dumb error on my part. Anyway, in case anyone has the same problem, if you go to start->programs->dvdxcopy express-> there is a drive selector. DUH! I have no idea how I overlooked it, but oh well, stranger things have happened. After that, no problems at all.

Ok, what you need to do is:

    1. Double click my computer.
    2. Double click c:
    3. Double click Program Files
    4. Select the DVD XCopy folder.
    5. Hit "delete".
    6. Say "yes".
    7. Download DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink.

Yeah, I know dvdxcopy isn't very well liked, but when I tried using dvddecrypter and dvdshrink, it was taking 4+ hours to rip and burn. With dvdxcopy, it only takes about an hour. I am going to try using dvdshrink and not doing the deep analyze, I am thinking that will probably speed things up. I'm sure if I upgrade my computer, which it needs badly, that will help things as well.

That is not normal. You may have direct memory access turned off.

How slow is your PC? Ripping with DVD Decrypter, regardless of machine speed, should be a 20-minute affair, tops. Burning likewise takes 15 minutes at 4x, or 25 minutes at 2x.

DVD Shrink, unless your machine is horrifyingly slow, should take no more than about an hour. That's an hour and a half, total process, worst case scenario.

I'm thinking there's something very wrong.

I am getting ready to reformat and reinstall everything, the computer is a 1ghz with 384mb ram. I realize it is on the slow side for dvd processing, but I don't have the $ for upgrading right now. It has been about 2 years since it was last formatted, so it is due. Especially with all of the various programs installed, then uninstalled, etc. After I get it back up and running, I'll try it again and see what happens.

  10. Wont change much, a computer that speed takes a long time to do decoding. One that speed is going to take 3 times as long as one thats 3ghz to decode. Plus, using deep analysis, that adds alot of time, so 4 hours is right.

    Not really

My 800Mhz Duron will Rip, shrink and burn a dvd in a little over two hours.

  12. Yeah, that sounds way too long. I have a 1.6GHZ with 512MB of ram & Decrypter takes 15-20min, Shrink using deep analysis about 30min & about 15min to burn with Nero. Bazooka is probably right, check to make sure transfer mode is set to DMA (in device manager).

    My brother's 500Mhz P3 rips/shrinks/burns faster than that.

2 hours I'd believe on the outside. 4 hours is just silly.

Yeah, right before I installed the burner and the burning programs, I noticed it was starting to drag. My wife has installed a couple rather large programs for school using student versions, then came back over the top of them and installed full versions, which has slowly ate away at my disk space. I also have quite a few programs that I no longer need that need to be wiped out. I think this reformat will take care of most of my speed issues. Is deep analysis really necessary, or will regular be just fine with no noticeable difference in burn quality?

No, it is not necessary, but it is up to you.

Deep analysis is just so the movie can look a little better, but I have never done it and my backups look great.

I've found it makes little difference with most movies but, occasionally it makes a big difference. For me, Master & Commander is definitely one that was worth the extra 30min to run deep analysis on. This movie has a lot of water, fog, low light sequences, & people moving past the camera at very close range.

Since then, I've always used it. I don't mind the extra time it takes.

Ok, where are my posts going? This is getting extraordinarily irritating. About 10 of my posts have gone missing in the past few days.

I wrote earlier that if you're in the group of people that finds 20% compression in DVD Shrink to look ugly, that you'll appreciate the re-encode more. If you don't see a big quality drop at 20%, then you won't see much of a difference between the two approaches.
