I agree the woman is stupid, but so is the dispatcher. A major part of their job is to keep the person on the other end of the line calm.

  3. all dogs have to be checked around children, even the people that say labradors are good, you still need to be mindful of the fact you dont know what your animal can do.

i remember a few years ago a report about 3 chiuauas killing a 8 month old.

they are pack animals and if feeling pressure will atack.

You got it. The parents are the ones who are responsible not the dogs.

Looks like an old picture, Cap - is that you in the photo?

The dog looks like he's still pretty young there (well, it's hard to tell because of the angle of the picture). Nice looking dog.

911 Operator Calls Mother 'Stupid' After Pit Bull Attacks Boy
Mother Says Operator Made Her Feel Like 'No-Good Mom'

    POSTED: 11:25 am EST February 10, 2005

CINCINNATI -- A Cincinnati 911 dispatcher faces discipline after a mother who made a frantic call for help said she was outraged by the dispatcher's response.

The mother called to report the family's pit bull had attacked her 18-month-old boy.

The operator quickly dispatched an emergency crew, but she's in trouble for calling the mother and her husband "stupid people," WLWT-TV in Cincinnati reported.

"Like I was to blame, I'm worthless, a no-good mom or something," said the mother, Samantha Osborne.

Osborne said the dog, called JD, had never been aggressive in 10 years with the family.

"He was good with my kids -- all three," she said.

But in a split-second, the pit bull turned on Jesse, attacking his face.

"Three people were right there and the dog out of nowhere went straight for the baby," she said.

Here's what was said when Osborne called 911:

Dispatcher: "What kind of dog attacked him, Samantha?"

Dispatcher, repeating: "What kind of dog attacked him, Samantha?"

Samantha to her husband: "What kind of dog is JD?"

    Husband: "He's a pit bull."

Samantha to operator: "He's a pit."

    Dispatcher: "Stupid people."

Tom Rapp, the dispatchers' supervisor, called the remark "unacceptable" and said the dispatcher could be suspended.

Even though it's no excuse, Rapp said, emotions do get the best of his dispatchers sometimes.

"Any call you take involving a kid becomes 10 times more emotional. You find yourself wrapped up," he said.

When Osborne listened to a tape of the frantic call again, the entire nightmare was replayed: a little boy scarred for life and a mother trying to overcome the guilt.

"I never want someone else to hear those words from a 911 dispatcher, to feel the way I'm feeling. It's not right," Osborne said.

The little boy is out of the hospital after getting 17 stitches on his eyes and mouth.

The family dog was put down.
That's just wrong. I don't see anything wrong with what the dispatcher said. I'm going through a simiilar situation. My sister just got a pitbull supposedly for her 1 year old to play with.

    I can relate to this.

About two months ago in Show Low, we had a pack of pit bulls attack and kill a 5 year-old girl. In her own front yard! The dogs belong to neighbors who have a well-publicized record of letting their pit bulls run loose, and the city rarely did anything about it.

I took one of those 911 calls that day. It was a neighbor calling, begging to get help because the child was bleeding like a fire hose. I'm not sure if the detectives and EMT's who responded to that scene have returned to duty yet. All parties involved have needed some level of therapy.

They can't train to you 'deal' with calls like that. All they can do is train you to be a 'compassionate robot' and teach you to 'KEEP YOUR PERSONAL OPINIONS TO YOURSELF!' so they don't get sued because you're human.

It's a ******* joke. Perpetuated by stupid people who are always looking for someone else to blame for their actions.

  9. I somewhat agree that having a dangerous breed of dog is unwise.

However, it is definitely not the operator's place to judge anybody in distress and in need of help over the phone.

  10. I think that Chows are excellent dogs, as long as you raise them from puppies, and treat them well.

I've had several dogs in my short lifetime, but most of them ended up being stolen or ended up running away. The first dog that I ever truly had (meaning that it didn't run away or was dognapped) was a Chow named Mikey, and he was the best dog that I ever had... and quite possibly, he might be the best dog I will ever have. I received him for my birthday, and I raised him from a young puppy. He was the most loving dog you would ever meet. Also, he kept our house safe, and even guarded the fruit and vegetable warehouse across the street. In fact, the owner of the warehouse, a dog lover herself, would often help out with vet bills, etc. because they never had any robberies after we got Mikey. Also, my brother received a dog for his birthday, too... Mikey's little brother, Gordy. Supposedly, one of Gordy's parents was a wolf, so that explains why Gordy was a little nutty and always wanted to play. He was a good dog, too, but it seemed like his wiring was a little screwy. He would do weird things like stand on top of his doghouse during a rainstorm, while Mikey would be cozy inside his house.

Around his 10th birthday or so, Mikey's health started degrading. He lost all his hair and wasn't his usual active self. However, he was still as loving as ever, and would perk up a little when my brother and I would make the daily feeding rounds. After several vet visits, Mikey seemed to improve a little, but in my heart, I knew that he was going to leave soon. After he did, Gordy couldn't stand being without his brother, and he passed away suddenly from depression.

When Mikey was about 5 or so, we had also gotten a little Chihuahua named Wiggles. In fact, she's going to be 10 later this year, and she's still as playful as always. She really helped us get over our grieving period with Mikey and Gordy. I can't imagine life without her, either.

It took a few years, but we got two new chows, also brothers. One black, and one brown (Mikey and Gordy were both brown), named Jack and Jet, respectively. Oddly enough, it seems like Jet is similar to Gordy (a bit nutty, but loving), and Jack is similar to Mikey, but also a bit nutty like his brother. I remember that Jack had a problem with his tail, and that Jet was scared of us (the previous owner seemed to ignore them), but with some time and loving, they grew attached to us and are excellent dogs. Also, they seemed to have become attached to the produce warehouse, too, and also a neighbor's house (although they probably watch the neighbor's house because the neighbor often rewards them with treats).

Sorry for the long post, but I just thought I'd share my dog stories.

Yeah, we should start a pets / animal stories thread, or a pet photo thread (if there isn't one already).

You know Indo...had I been those people's neighbor, I would be willing to bet they wouldn't have let the dogs run loose.

If they are on my property, I shoot one of them and they'll keep track of the rest of them...and if not...I'll shoot the rest.

They should've euthanized the dog owners, too. IMHO.

I wouldn't mind it but only if they took Capmaster out.

After the 2nd dog, I'd just cut out the middleman and come looking for the owners.
