  1. 1) Reading a DVD-ROM
    2) Ripping
    3) Writing (and does going at higher speeds wear on the drive more)

My Pioneer 108 is my only DVD drive on my PC, so I use it for all of the above. I was wondering what process makes my drive work the hardest. I rip at 8-9x and usually burn 8-12x.

Wear implies moving parts. Spindle bearings and head seek.

The drive is supposed to handle speeds within its rated specs, but one would assume fastest spindle speeds and whipping the heads around on a fragmented disc would give the drive the greatest workout.

Best way to destroy a drive is to place a label off center. Similar to a washing machine with the heavy towels all on one side.

So then, can playing rentals w/ those security labels on them prematurely wear out a dvd player?

Just use it, if it breaks in warranty, get it fixed.

And lower the speed on rental DVD playback if you are worried.

  5. The reason I ask is that my previous drive, Optorite, crapped out on me in only 3 months. I only burned 120 movies or so.

I'm hoping this one will last longer. I average about 5 movies ripped and burned a week

You didn't ask, but adding a DVD ROM unit would reduce the 'wear' considerably, if you have the room to install it. And the P108 is a much better unit that than the Optowrite, IMO. You shouldn't worry too much.

  7. I wish, but I have an old HP and they only gave me one drive bay. I don't wanna go external yet.
