  1. Brent212 and Gen-An. Please note we are talking about two different media. My thread refers to -R G01 and you are referring to +R T02.

steve2713, Thanks for the heads up. I really wish Rima had these. None of those other three are as good. At least this will force them to drop down the price of their Sonic..... of course it will never get to it's real value, I doubt they will ever pay us to take it.
Still a few bugs in the system...

I take it that means you've had bad luck with their Sonic discs? :P I've used hundreds of the 1-2x sold White top thermal printable Sonics, media code MUST001. They're actually 4x media, and they've burned with only about 5% coasters (and by coasters I mean the few discs that have read errors only within the last 100mb, I never have had any large errors spikes except for the occasional disc with high errors at the very edge), and this includes burning them all to the very edges of the discs, usually 4478mb. They burn very well on both my NEC 1300 and 2500 at 4x, you can burn them at 6x and 8x but they have read errors past about 4.2gb.

Here's what most of the discs scan like at 4x, a very typical disc:

Nothing special by any means, but certainly good enough for cheapo discs. They play flawlessly, they've always worked well for me for cheap discs and I've ordered several different times, they've all been of similar quality.

P.S. - Benq scans PIF at 4 times the rate of Liteon drives, so those peaks of around 8 would only show as 2(!) on a Liteon testing the discs. Very good for cheapos.

No problem . Like I said, I've never had an issues with Shop4Tech, although I see the occasional complaint of them here and there. Their packaging could be a little better, but I've never had anything arrive damaged at all.

  5. I only had one problem and that was enough. After that I spent some time and learned what the different media codes meant. I have never had any shipping problems either but others have had a few, especially with that Must media code. Yours look fine, but I'll stick with the good stuff. Both shop4tech and meritline have had a problem shipping the wrong item, but that is usually fixable. I will probably order from them after a little while longer. I already paid too much ordering these early and I need to get a rock bottom price to average out my cost, especially now that I see these are such great 8X burners.

    Nothing like good old competition!

  6. So I can safely burn these at 8X with the NEC 3500? Have you played one burned at 8X? If so that was a great deal at 32 cents apiece.

If you are asking about the TY G01, the answer is yes with my 3500 and 2.18 firmware. I use the 218btrpc1 from here http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/

and as you can see from the scans earlier in the post they are near perfect. I have to order more.

  8. I also bought 50 of these Fuji made in Japan Taiyo Yuden T02 +R's from BestBuy and unfortunately they turned out to be the first TY's I've ever had that are junk.

Everything I burn on these turns out to have huge macroblocks right from the start no matter the speed that I try. I burn the same files on a TY -R and they are perfect at any speed from 2x to 16x. I'm using the NEC 3520.

Update: I just tried one of these +R's at 8x (which I hadn't tried before) and it burned fine. So either the 1st 3 of the batch were duds or these really are optimized for 8x.

If you are asking about the TY G01, the answer is yes with my 3500 and 3.18 firmware. I use the 128btrpc1 from here http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/

You mean 2.18 firmware don't you? I updated to 2.18 when I was having Nero problems, didn't help.

  10. I received my TY 4x from Supermedia store. I was suprised that its so cheap for TYs. The packaging it came in seems kind weird to me though. It was just shrink wrapped, no spindle and it just has a sticker stating "VALUE DVD-Rs." No made in Japan or Taiyo Yuden emblems anywhere. I burned a disc that was about 3.8 gigs and it seemed to play fine. I did some scans. Hope some people can look and tell me if I got bootlegs.

A lot of people have reported problems with TY discs when they are sold under another name, especially Fuji. So far , this has not been the case with TY media sold as TY media such as these.

  12. samijubal: Sorry, I do mean 2.18. What problems are you having??

dosun: Pioneer drives don't really support PI/PIF scanning as far as I know. These look exactly like the genuine TY media I have seen before. Serial numbers in the right place, rings in the right spot, dye color looks right, etc. Most importantly, the scans look like TY scans when burned on my 3500. If they are forgeries, they usually are sold under a name other than TY or overseas and most often are 8X. If you are going to make fakes they usually aren't discontinued media.

  13. I'm not having any problems. I just wanted to be sure they are OK at 8X before I burn them. I send alot of stuff to people all over, including other countries, I just don't want to have to send replacements because of problems. I've never had any problems yet with S03s on the NEC.

Damn sorry to hear about the bad luck w/ the Best Buy TDK dvd+r 8x's

I have yet to have any of my best buy TDK dvd+r 8x fail on me yet. But here is a kicker:

Using my LG external burner on my MAC using Rocio Toast and its firewire port I can burn these TDKs at 12X speeds and they burn sweet!!.

** NOW Using the same LG burner and hooking it up my my PC laptop in USB2.0 and burning w/ NERO, it lets me select to 12x speeds but it does not burn at 12X and its the underbuffer run keeps going up and down im %.
I mean all the dvds still burn 100% w/o errors but selecting 12x or even 8x speeds it takes over 18 minutes to burn a dvd @ 4.3gigs. Now if I select these 8x TDKs at 4x it does not drop the underrun buffer and burns a 4.3 gb under 15 min or so. Unsolved mystery. lol

My mac on the other hand can burn at 12x w/ 4.3 gigs right under 5 minutes. I dunno. Huummmm

How exactly does 4x dvd-r burn at 8x? Is that even possible?

  19. Funny this is mentioned. Around Christmas, they lowered the price of Fujifilm DVD-Rs at the BX on base (from $30/10 pack to $12/10 pack). The Fujifilm +Rs remained the same price. The -Rs were labeled "made in Japan" and the +Rs "made in Taiwan." I didn't really need any but I picked up a 10 pack of the -Rs today. They're Taiyo Yuden media (TYG02) as I suspected. I bet the other ones are the Ricoh stuff. Nobody ever believes me here when I explain to the that all those DVD-/+RWs have diffferent media codes and the more expensive DVDs could be even poorer quality.....

The firmware in the burner determines at what speeds the media will burn, based on the media code on the disc. Usually the media manufacturer and the firmware programmer will agree on the correct speed. Sometimes the firmware will set a lower speed, as in the case of Ritek R03, and sometimes the programmer will have tested the media at higher speeds and will set that as acceptable. Hackers could theoretically set any media to burn at any speed available on the drive and some have tried. Just because it can be done does not mean it will be any good.

In this case, NEC has determined that they feel 8X is OK for G01 and I agree.

Got my 400 more just in time I guess. That gives me 1000 at about 30 cents apiece, I'm set for a long time.

They are back, but the $10 off code no longer works. They are now $35.00\100.

It's $33.30\100 at Shop4Tech both with free ground shipping.

  27. I just received 2 stacks from shop4tech and from supermedia and they were both identical to the stack I received last week.....except the media code was G02! It appears to be genuine TY and had the same wrapper but turns out to be a 12X media. Something weird is going on here, maybe TY needs cash for the fiscal year end?

The 100 Taiyo Yuden 4X DVD-R that I ordered from supermediastore came in yesterday, and they are TYG02 instead of the TYG02 that I expected. I have burnt 3 of them, and they are indeed high quality discs. I wonder if I order more will I get TYG02 again? Hmmm....

  30. Just thought I would let you know, there appear to be some opinions that these TY are Grade B, although most people agree they have never heard of TY having different grades. If you don't scan or are otherwise concerned you might want to stick to 4X.
