    Many are already. Xvid, DivX & cetera is mpeg4 AFAIK...

    Perhaps they mean real MPEG4 as in MPEG4 video/audio in an mp4 container?

    If your avi file uses XviD, etc. and compatbile audio like aac or mp3 then you can simply remux to mp4. Check out mp4box, you can also have ttext subs. Should point out though that mp4box doesn't support AVC muxing, so if your avi has AVC video you will need to use mp4creator.
