I have been having issues with DVD-r compatibility in a few different stand-alone DVD players. I have used several programs to write the DVD disks - Nero, DVD-Shrink, and DVD-Decryptor (not sure of versions but each at least 1.5years old since any update). It seems the "cheaper" players such as an APEX will play any disk, written by any program, while the "expensive" players are much more particular to what they play. In one instance, a friend has an "expensive" player (I forget the brand/model) that will ONLY play disks created by DVD-SHRINK. I would prefer to use NERO as the write times are much shorter.

Are there certain options I should be using perhaps within NERO to write the most "compatible" disks? I am currently using the DVD-ROM udf option instead of the DVD-video option as I had found it a bit more reliable.

any advise on the "best" options to use within NERO would be appreciated.

DVD-Video template. You need to be DVD spec. That is all.

    Nero 6 sucks:

  3. I dunno, I am a happy Nero user and burn all of my DVDs using Nero Vision Express, using DVD-video. The only things I change are the resolution and bit rate settings in order to fit longer video onto a disc. (Wanna talk about an app that sucks, I could go on about Pinnacle Studio...).

From when I first starded burning DVD-R media I had compatibility problems with the DVD player I had at the time (it was a Toshiba DVD-VCR combo but I don't know the model). IMHO, there is NOTHING in Nero or any other program that would have improved disc compatibility with that machine. It would play about one out of every four DVD-Rs I burned with Pinnacle Studio, though almost all of the same discs would play fine on my cheap, portable APEX DVD player. Same issue when I switched to Nero 6 Ultra Edition (I switched programs primarily because Pinnacle was an unstable POS). I tried different brands of media, no difference. I tried changing settings, no improvement. Some discs would yield a "disc error" message from the Toshiba, while others would play fine most of the way through only to start pixelizing near the end to the point where it would eventually freeze and play no more.

I did notice that my playability results were somewhat improved when the disc wasn't near capacity, i.e. when the player didn't have to read all the way to the center of the disc.

Since buying a new JVC combo unit, every disc I burn with Nero plays perfectly, and it also plays all of the discs I burned long ago which never worked on the Toshiba...I thought they were just defective burns, but I kept most of them in a stack because I couldn't bring myself to just toss a couple hundred bucks worth of coasters.

Just an FYI, DVD's are burnt starting from the centre and working outwards!
