  1. Hi

I have just bought the Adaptec Video! DVD Media Centre to back up a load of Hi8 family videos to DVD.

The capture & quality of the MPEG2 that the Videoh capture thing does is fine ... all video & audio in sync etc. However, when I (apparently) have to use SonicMyDVD to burn the dvd disc, the sound goes out of sync by about 5 seconds on a 45 minute video from the camcorder (the audio finishes first while video is still playing).

I have just downloaded a trial version of Womble which is supposed to fix problems like this, and doing a preview of the Videoh! capture shows no sign of going out of sync.

Where is the problem? Is it the SonicMyDVD throwing the video/audio out? Is there a (simple) way of sorting this out so I can basically dump the MPEG2 onto a dvd & have it play "note for note" on a standalone player? Or do I have to go through all the encoding that I have grown to fear as I have so many Hi8 tapes to do

Any help would be most gratefully accepted.

I am not really too worried about video quality as such, just to get the video & audio in time would be enough for me.

    Thank you hopefully in advance

    Ian

If your source mpeg is in sync the the dvd produced with SVCD2DVD v2 will be too. Give the demo a try.

Sounds like mydvd is remultiplexing the mpegs.

  5. Ok - I have just downloaded the svcd2dvd2 trial version & its telling me something about .net framework something or other .... should i do that?

Also it tells me that there will be a watermark on the menus - I am not doing menus, just transferring the raw Hi8 video to dvd!

  7. For around the same price as the Adaptec product, you could buy a stand alone dvd recorder. That's what I used when I tranferred a bunch of vhs to dvd.

PC vs standalone has been discussed endlessly on this forum. Do a search for more info.

I have tried Sonic for PC work, didn't like it. I prefer Ulead DVD Movie Factory. YMMV (There's a free trial)

You might also want to try VideoReDo. It has a "quickstream fix" option that goes through and fixes problems that drive the audio and video out of synch.

    They have a free trial.

You will also like it for quick trims of MPEG2 files. A couple of months ago I did just want you are doing and it was great to be able to very quickly trim the ends and chop out dead spots and a couple of scenes that I did NOT want on the DVDs.

It might be the sonic is re-encoding your mpeg2 files before authoring. If you are capturing dvd compliant mpeg2 files, it is not necessary to re-encode them. Most authoring programs have a check box for "do not re-encode compliant mpeg files" I don't use sonic, so I can't say it can do this. You might try either tmpenc author or ulead moviefactory to author your your files to dvd. Both have trials.

  13. okey dokey ......

I have now tried TMPGenc DVD Author to make the vobs etc., and also uLead DVD Movie Factory 3 .........

The audio video sync is still out, by a lot less than the SonicDVD version, but still 1 or so seconds out on a 40 minute mpeg2.

It's so weird because the MPEG2 (from the camcorder) is perfectly in time .... why should it go out of time when I try to encode it?

Anything I can do? Or do I have to live with it?

    Cheers

You are not being clear. When you say the peg2 form tha camcorder is is in sync. Do you mean when you watch on the camcorder or after you capture it and then watch it on your computer? If yo describe your steps in detail, it will be easier to help. Most time sync issue occur at capture (when capturing to mpeg2) or encoding. I don't know that sync issues can occur at authoring unless you are actually re-encoding and authoring. One way to avoid sync issues it to capture to lossless avi, demux, encode the video to mpeg2, mux, then author.

  15. Sorry .........

I am using Adaptec Videoh! to capture analogue camcorder Hi8 tapes (to make PAL dvds)

The mpeg2 that this creates is perfectly in time.

When I run it through TMPGenc DVD Author or uLead DVD Movie Factory, it creates the VOBs etc .... then burnt with Nero and/or uLeads own burning software. When played back on standalone DVD player, by the end of the 40 minutes playback, the audio is out by about 1-2 seconds to the video on both TMPGenc's and uLeads programmes.

Hope this helps work out what is wrong!

    Thank you
