I just decided to make the switch and as soon as I installed it, PC Cillin told me that the virus ADW_NETPALS.A was caught. Is this just a coincedence or did I just do a bad thing by installing Firefox?

It is a coincidence.

I use Firefox and have never had that happen.

That is the mozilla website. Has to be a coincidence, I have known plenty of people to download Mozilla / Firefox and never have a problem. Did you just install PC-cillin?
