I have seen the Mac prices, i pay by reliablility not populartity.

Everyone can own a turd if they want to, i choose to own a Mac that eats the IBM and then it takes a big stinky IBM and then flushes the IBM down the drain.

A Mercedes is expensive too but you rather own a Yugo instead?

  6. Very funny! I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. I love these questions where the answer is so obvious.
Still a few bugs in the system...

I find it funny when these Mac zealots say they get viruses and worms literally within minutes of getting their PC connected to the internet. I suppose I would too if I clicked on every single porn/casino/pharmaceuticals advertisement that popped up on every single website I went to... but shouldn't common sense come in somewhere?

It seems to boil down to the Mac people saying PC's are crap because they can't act like a completely inexperienced 4 year old with a computer and not get viruses. Well... duh!

So I guess PCs are best suited to people who have some common sense and Macs are for n00bs.

So you own a Mercedes? Why would anyone own a turd like that when you can buy a Rolls?

nothing to do with superiority - just ubiquity. why bother writing a virus (whose entire existence is aimed at propagating as widely as possible) for a platform that has <10% market share?

the important question is, what can you do on a Mac that I can't do on a PC? 15 years ago, it used to be quite a bit. now, not so much.

and for the price of one Mac, I could build 3 PCs that are faster machines.

I used to believe the myth of their stability as well - until the day in my print shop when I totally froze the new G4 10 times in the space of an hour, trying to open a file and send it to the print spooler. I finally took the disc over to the Windows box, opened the file (after giving it an extension so the program could recognize the Mac file) and printed it on the first try.

Mark V by your postings you are verily proving the idea of the radical Mac zealot. Have a quick look at the number of posts just in this one thread so far. Mark V posts are dramatically overrepresented. Not only that but it's you who are closest to sounding like trying to start a flame war.

It's funny but the Mac pushers always use a negative argument to support their argument. ie. Macs are better because PCs are crap. It always goes that way. PCs get viruses - PCs crash - PCs are slower and less efficient.

It's never "Macs are better because they can do this or that". It's always "Macs are better because you can't do this or that with a PC".

I don't like negative campaigns. They don't offer anything new, they just try to tear down what's already there so they appear to then rise above the rest.

Assuming that you get a newer Mac G5 without the monitor Dual PowerPC G5 2.5GHz Processors, 512MB RAM, 160GB Hard Drive, 8X DVD-R SuperDrive, Mac OS X Panther v10.3
    for about $3000 USD retail.

What kind of specs would these faster PCs have
and could you really build them for 1000 each?

  18. About 3 years ago I work in a Apple Warranty Repair Center. At that time Apple claimed that the G4 that I had on my desk was the fasted personal computer in the world. Every night I would go home and fire up my Pentium 200 mhz and every night I would say the same thing: "This Pentium is faster than that G4 at work.

I found the G4 to be unstable, a slow network printer, and extremely expensive to repair. At that time Steve J. was charging about $90 for a floppy that would cost $10 for a PC.

When customers came in with a motherboard issue we advised them that it was smarter to buy a new computer rather that fix the old Apple due to the cost of parts.

And don't bother bringing your Apple in for warranty repair if it's not within warranty coverage. Many people would bring their computer in a day or two out of warranty and Apple would not cover it unless you fought with them. (Maybe this is fair and maybe not.)

And then there was the avid Max repair guy who constantly cutdown the PC until one weekend he went over to a friends house to play some network games on the PC and then decided that those PC's were pretty cool.

In conclusion I found the Apple computers to be want-a-be PC's. And those Apple people who would come in, well let's just say DIFFERENT.

  20. I don't own a Mac. My boss purchased them for us. We got a few G5 1.8 and a dual 2.0. We use
Final cut pro, Shake, and Motion.
I could not afford them and the software for them so I build my own PCs and use Mostly Sony
    Software for freelance work.
I love my PCs and they are fairly reliable. That said, if money was not an issue I would get a Mac at home in a second. The real time preview and lightning fast rendering capabilities of the Macs allow me to do almost twice the work on a Mac as I would on a PC, in half the time. The newer Mac systems have absolutely no bottlenecks, all of the software is geared towards 64 bit, multiple processor systems.
I don't know of anything in the PC world that will do what the Macs can do

Thats a stupid link. Ive never had any problems like that on my PC, a few tracking cookies here and there big deal. I know that many many people have complete shut down on their PCs, its true. But that due to their own ignorance and faith in greedy companies like AOL, and Symantec to do everything for them.

ROFL - I was watching a documentary last night about advertising in corporate america called The Persuaders - It was a Frontline documentary if that means anything - but anyway, in it they were studying "focus groups" (one of those wanky terms the advertising industry uses a lot) of people who behaved in a cult-like manner to see how they could get consumers to behave in the same way toward products. ie. people who are fanatical about Nike shoes, or BMW cars or Body Shop soaps beyond reason.

Three of the "cult-like" focus groups they studied were Falun Gong members (fair enough), Volkswagon Beetle owners and Linux users.

They described them as being "cult-like" because they have devotion to something obscure and non-mainstream beyond reason. ie. they will not accept that something else is better regardless of how much evidence is put in front of them. They have lost the ability to reason so they can remain in their exclusive little world or clique.

I don't think it's that much of a stretch to say that Mac users are dangerously close to fitting that description as well.

The title of this thread was something like "Why doesn't everyone use a MAC?" The answer is that they're extremely cost prohibitive and proprietary in all of the worst ways. Even if they actually were "better" than PCs (which is arguable across the board), they're not so much better than PCs that they'd be worth the money.

The thing about PCs is that, with quality parts and just a little research, you CAN build a stable and reliable machine. It would cost twice as much as an over the counter PC, which is still HALF the price of a MAC. Even if the MAC can out-perform said PC, can it do so by 200%? If it can't then it's not worth the money. Since the only way to actually find out is to pay for one, any sane person would pass. It has nothing to do with being lazy or afraid to try something new. It has to do with being afraid to waste our hard earned money.

Now if Apple decided to open up the clone market like IBM did with PCs, then we'd see less costly versions out and more people would try them. With that, we'd start to see some parallels with the PC market. The less expensive models would be less stable, would crash more, etc. This would force Apple to try to "idiot proof" their OS for the cheaper clones and soon there would be mulitple flavors of the OS just like WINDOWS.

It's easy for Apple to control EVERYTHING about their systems and then claim it as a superior product, it's probably true. If they really want to impress ME personally, they should get into the same market as PCs and deal with what they find there. MAC users can feel as superior as they like. MAC rules in its tiny little "boutique market", but on the world market they're just an expensive novelty. Comparing MACs to PCs is like comparing apples to hamburger. Different markets completely and no competition at all.

    Peace brothers!

All I can say is this:
I troubleshoot both PC and Macs for a living.
I spend 10 hours a day doing this.
I also take in outside clients PCs and Macs to fix.

More often than not, people by nature, are CHEAP.
And most people who bring me their PCs
are bringing me beige build it yourselfer PC boxes
bought from Tiger Electronics or somesuch, and want to
know if they can run Win XP on a Celeron 700 mhz
P3, with integrated video and a 12gb HD, all so they can
play some "cool game" they saw, or learn to "make DVDs,
    like their friends do."

Most of the Mac people who bring in their machines, just want to do the same thing. Amizingly, the total bottom cost
always swings in favor of the Mac people, who usually just
need a little more ram, or a larger HD, say 8 gb to 20GB.
The PC users, more often than not, end up needing a new
    PC.

Yes, you pay more for a mac, but you get a heck of a lot more. i've got a pair of Macs ( a 466 and a 533 mhz G4)
in the shop that are seven years old,
that run the latest OS ( Panther, 10.37)
and all it took was doubling the ram, and doubling the
amount of HD. I can't get a 7 year off the shelf PC
with a Celeron to run Win XP.

    caveat emperor!
