Here's a scan of a 16x speed VERBATIM MCC 004 DVD+R disc burned with a BENQ 1620. Scanned with NERO SPEED CD/DVD @ 4x. Feel free to comment.

Very good from the BenQ drive's determination. It's always nice to check discs in other drives just for a comparison though.

Try burning those 16x rated discs at 12x. They give unbelievable results as shown in the forums at cdfreaks. The BENQ1620 seems to love verbatims.
Also, I don't see how the scan is so terrible on the Lite-On drive.

We're in agreement. I don't understand how the Lite-On can give such horrible results.Originally Posted by lordsmurf

So,
How should we interpret this?
Scans are meanless?
One of the test combo used (nero/benq, Kprobe/lite-on) is bs?
The lite-on does not like MCC 004?
These tests are getting me crazy and this one is a gooooood example
Does the software must be upgrade for new media code (like firmware)? -
my BENQ drive doesn't have the latest firmware B7T9, as you can see i am still using B7P9 which seems to work better with the brands of media that i am currently using. the 16x verbatim dvd+r i got from sams club was a 20 pack in jewel cases for $20.00. i burned that 16x disc using NERO version 6.6.0.5. i don't take scans seriously but there are others that do. in my opinion as long as they playback fine that's what matters. i just thought i would do a scan with the 16x verbatim dvd+r media and see what comments would be made.Originally Posted by RickTheRed

I agree with you. Some people live and die by the scan results, not just if it plays fine in yopur dvd player. It gets to the point of madness, (just head over to cdfreaks.com) The B7P9 FW is much better IMO too, as with the B7T9 the WOPC (walking optimal power calibration) is disabled and can give you all around worse results. They only released that FW for mainland china where cheaper media is floating around, so that the drive would actually burn something to the disc.

It was B7S9 that was released for the China market and WOPC was supposedly disabled for some crap media codes (like AN3*). I don't know if it's still disabled in B7T9 for these media codes but it does not matter for good media codes and B7T9 is at least as good as B7P9 imo.Originally Posted by mattyboy
As for the scanning results I would not trust the LDW-*11 scans so much, I've seen lots of weird scans from these drives. -
The The PI value should be below 230 and the PIF value should be below 4 for a good scan. So the BenQ scan is not very good that either at the end of the disc (because PIF is above 4). I agree with shmorq that you should try burning the disc at lower speed like 12X.
My interpretation is that BenQ is much better to read this disc than the LiteOn. It is the combination of burning, disc and reader which is tested. Maybe the LiteOn reader will do better if the disc is burned at slower speed?Ronny -
DVD specs are max 280 PI sum 8 (PI errors in 8 consecutive ECC blocks) and max 4 PIF per 1 ECC block. CD speed scans for BenQ displays PIF per 8 ECC (if I remember correct) so naturally higher PIF levels are ok. Some more info is posted by the author of CD speed here.Originally Posted by ronnylov

The Liteon 411 and 811 drives tend to be very poor for scanning. There are exceptions to this, but many of us with these with drives experience very poor scanning results. I have a Liteon 811s, a Liteon 832s, and a Liteon 1213s. I can scan the same disc in all 3 of my Liteon drives, the 811s will return HORRIBLE results, and the 832 and the 1213 will show very good results.
