  1. I tried to back up some avi files using Nero (data DVD). It is for a friend who I believe has backed them up to avi files using various codecs(I'm not sure). Needless to say, out of 5 movies placed on the DVD, only one would work. I even tried copying one of them back to his harddrive and it still did not work.

I'm thinking that there was either some data corruption in the burning process or there is some method I must use to back up files with some codecs. Any suggestions?

I want to leave them in avi format, to save room on the DVD's. Maybe later, he'll want me to make them each DVD's again.

If there were no errors given when you copied the avi file(s) to the hard drive, it is more likely that you are missing the proper codec required to play back the file.

Try using Media Player Classic 6.4.8.2 or VLC as they have most codecs built into them.

You could also try using AVIcodec or GSpot to identify what codec is used (or ask your friend).

Common codecs include DivX and Xvid.

To back up the avi files, just copy them to a folder on your hard drive via Windows Explorer, then burn them as a data DVD with your choice of software. (I prefer Nero for data discs.)

To make sure the drive is reading the disc ok, try running a transfer rate test or disc scan using Nero CDDVDSpeed (the tool is free).

This is from a prevous post I made:

1.Make sure the software you are using to burn with is updated to the latest version. Which version you have can be found by opening the program and on the top click help>about (insert software title). Updates can be found on the vendor's site.
2.Update you DVD burner's firmware to the latest version. To find what version firmware you currently have see the manufactuer's site for details.
3.Try burning at a slower rate.
4.Last but not least use good media. Cheap discs are cheap for a reason. See the DVD Media section to the left for reviews and comments on media brands and see the media forum.

  4. Thanks for the advice both of you. First of all, I don't think it is the lack of codecs for playback, since they play on the computer before backing them up. Plus he does have the most common codecs. I was wondering if somehow the codecs didn't work for .avi files off of a disc. Nope they work, see below.
The media I'm using is Memorex. The software is Nero, latest version.
I burned at a lower speed and guess what. It worked. I guess my burner either decided not to work that one time or data dvd's at that high rate don't come out of my burner. Anyways, thank you for your help. I hope I can help someone else sometime. Now I just need to teach my friend how to back up his own files.
