  1. I am purchasing an ATI AIW 9600xt video card this week. I have an ASUS P4P800-e Deluxe motherboard. My onboard sound is: ALC850 CODEC with eight channels of 16-Bit DAC, a stereo 16-Bit ADC, and an AC97 2.3 compatible multi-channel audio.

I am not unhappy with the quality of my sound at all, but want to avoid any possible issues with the new video card. The video card will be used for PVR functions and analog tape transfers. Should a separate sound card be purchased.

I've been looking at the creative sound cards at New Egg in the $30 range and I am a little confused. They have a 5.1 card for $29.99 and also a 7.1 card for $29.99. It will be used mostly for captures and videoediting, maybe some television or DVD playback. I don't really listen to music or play games.

  3. I did end up having some audio sync issues. I also had problems with the mute and volume buttons on the remote not working. When I used the PVR functions to rewind it would keep the volume on the channel I was on and rewind the video only. Switching to my old soundblaster card, (connected internally to the video card), corrected all these problems. Only a couple of days old, but already love the aiw9600xt.

    Thanks for your help.

  4. I also have the AIW 9600XT & was using the onboard sound card. I did have a few issues with the audio, so I upgraded & bought Turtle beach Catalina OEM for $40 delivered from Newegg. I think you will find it to be a better audio card then the low end Creative’s. I initially purchased the $100 Creative with the $20 rebate from CC, but I was disappointed that it did not have a digital in & the gobs of software that creative has you install is ridiculous. I had the Turtle beach Catalina in my system in minutes; it has a separate recording volume + digital in. I have noticed an improvement in the captured sound as well.
