  1. Can anybody tell me hot to demux avi files to video and audio streams.

Suppose the avi file is a divx/Xvid file with AC3 5.1 audio. Then how to extract is AC3 audio from it in the same format. ffmpeg converts to 2 channel format. I want to retain all the channels.

    Thanx in advance

open the file in virtualdubmod, and you can save the audio from the streams list.

yep, Forum Troll is spot on. Open your file in virtualdubmod, then go to streams . stream list, and click the demux button. This should save the AC3 out to its own file. Then you can just feed the AVI into your encoder, encode either video only or as elementary streams and just discard the audio it outputs, then use your authoring software to join the two back together.

If you truly want a video-only AVI, after you have demuxed the audio out to AC3, simply click the disable button in streams > stream list, then go to video > Direct stream copy, then File > Save as ... and save out a new audio-less AVI.
    If in doubt, Google it.

If you were to use -acodec copy with ffmpeg then it shouldn't downmix/convert.
