  1. Hello,
This is my first post on this site. I record some of my home videos
    to DVD+R (Verbatim DVD+R,DigitalMovie 4.7GB 4x Speed
), they recorded fine, but will not play back on some
DVDs players. They will play on an older Apex, but not
Philips or a newer Zenith or Playstation 2 (new and
old, it does show the main menu , but when I select a scene it says it is unable to read disc). I received a response from Liteon and they said ''After you finish your recording. Try to change the title before you finalize.'', does this mean change the name on the title menu. Should I try different disc, someone mentioned sonic brand disc, they are cheap and work. Has anyone else had this problem, and have they cured it?
    Thank You (in advance)
    Eric

  2. Before I forget I have another questions. I read somewhere that it has a timer record along with the TVGUIDE features, is it true if so how do you make it work.
    Thanks AGAIN

  3. When I got my 5007 it didn't playback on any DVD player except for itself. I had 4 DVD players and the Lite on and the Lite on recordings only played back on itself. I was going to take it back but there is a firmware upgrade for the machine. Problem is that it appears that the 5007 seems to be the red headed stepchild of the Lite on series as you can't get the firmware upgrade at their Lite on site. Everything else you can. There is some other website you have to go to to get the upgrade (Goggle it.) After that I got the Lite on recorded stuff to play on 3 out of the 4 players. Not the Panasonic but I think that's because the 5007 is +R and my Panasonic only does -R. So if you are having trouble with playback on other machines try the firmware upgrade. It took me from 0 playback on other machines to 3 out of 4 machine playback. I still do get funky things happening with one machine as well as computer DVD ROM playback. On one machine it sort of stalls for a while as it plays back and on the computer DVD ROM drive it shows the title screen but doesn't playback anything past title 6. So the firmware might help but it might not be 100% fool proof.

I looked at trying to change the title like you said but couldn't find anywhere where you can change the title of the whole DVD only the title of the individual title that you recorded. e.x. if you record show 1 you can change the title. If you record show 2 you can change the title. I didn't see where you could change the name of the entire disk when you were done. I'm not saying you can't. I just couldn't find it or how to do it. So maybe they think you used the whole disk for one movie and they want you to change the title of that movie?

You can manually record things. I couldn't get the TV Guide to work. I thought when I got it that everything was working o.k. except that my picture's contrast and brightness was WAY too high and blown out (which it is still) but it looks like I can't get the TV Guide to work either (unless I don't have it turned off long enough) I did 22 hours and had nothing. Maybe it needs a week off? Anyway, I have to use the manual or timer settings only now. If I can remember right it's something like this:

    1) Push TV Guide Button.
    2) Push your arrow button until the "Schedule" choice is highlighted in yellow.
    3) Push the "info button" on your remotes bottom right side.
    4) A menu should now appear on the left hand side with various options and one of them is to set a new manual timer settings.
    5) Set your show up as it asks.
    6) Push Enter and then maybe Enter again (I forget right now.)
    7) Push the End button right next to your TV Guide Button to get you out of the TV Guide mode and back to TV.

  4. Hey thanks for all the information, I search for the firmware but all i found was the one available on www.liteonamericas.com. I will have to to an more extensive search after work tomorrow. I will also try the timer recorder tomorrow. Thanks again and if any know the site to find the firmware (one the was mention on the previous post, not on the offical site) please feel free to write a response. THANKS again bridge for all you help, hopefully I can get it working.

  5. Thanks for the response I go the timer record working, but I can not find the firmware you mentioned, I googled for about an hour with no luck, do you rememebr the site or what I should google I've tried (liteon 5007 firmware, lite-on 5007 firmware, liteon lvw-5007 firmware and so on).
    Thanks

  6. First, I have to say that I made a BIG mistake. I didn't have the remote with me and I told you to push the "info button" on the remote. That is totally wrong. You have to push the "Guide (Menu) button" on the bottom right side of the 4 part buttons around the TV Guide area. There is page up, page down, info, and guide. Push the "guide/menu" button.

Second, the firmware I used is located here. It is the only firmware upgrade that I have found for the 5007.

First of all if you go to the liteon site and go to 5007 specs it says it is made exclusivly for Sears.Thats why you dont see much online about it.The reason I got my 5007 is to record off of camcorder tapes that have been put away for years.5007 only records dvd+r. I have been making copies for my sister and she has a Toshiba that only plays dvd-r. After recording and finalizing the dvd-r off of the 5007, I then make a copy on the computer onto a dvd-r. Its been working out that way.

  8. One of my DVD players is a Toshiba. The Lite On recorded stuff didn't playback on that either. It did after I did the firmware update. I'm not saying that a firmware update will work with your Toshiba but I'm just saying that it did with mine. Since I guess the firmware update is from Lite On then I guess it doesn't hurt to try it out. I think it must make the recorder's disks more readable by more machines or something.

  9. I'll try that FIRMWARE update again, hopefully it works. I do not have a DVDburner on my computer so I can't transfer on DVD-R . I also heard the following liteon "does not bitset +R to rom, if the 5007 is like the 5001, for some settop players you may have to make copy of 5007 disk on your pc then re burn it with bitsetting to +R media, or burn it to a -R media." Anyone else heard of that, should I take mine back to sears and get a different player? Does the -R play on more players then the +R?

  10. I've had my 5007 for a week now. Had a few problems in the beginning with system lock-up and no TV Guide Onscreen, however, once I installed the firmware update - it has been smooth sailing. I dl'd from http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download_dvd.htm . I'm really enjoying the TV Guide Onscreen feature. To learn more about the TV Guide go to: www.tvgos.com. To use the manual record mode, see page 39 of the instruction booklet for detailed instructions.

Miy unit works fine. I've been using Maxell DVD media and they are playing in 3 other DVD players (Sony, Magnavox, and Norcent) plus in my PC player. I've transferred VHS to DVD without a hitch. I don't know anything about titles, editing, etc, and will have to learn about those. Has anyone tried Memorex DVD+R or +RWs? They're much cheaper in my area but I don't want to purhase them unless I know they'll work.

One of the things that irritates me a bit, is the DVD player seems to be loud the first several minutes of playing. After awhile, the sound diminishes. Is anyone else experiencing this? The remote is nicely laid out but the buttons are a bit small - even for my small hands.

Did anyone get the bonus CD that is offered at the LiteOn site?

I don't need anything sophisticated or fancy, so overall, I'm quite pleased with the unit. It was on sale at Sears for $149 and then I had a $10 off coupon. I didn't get the extended warranty. But they said I had thirty days to get it if I wanted it. I thought it was costly - $23 or $28 for 2 years - but that is for a replacement of equal value and not a repair.

  11. I just got the bonus disc in the mail (as I was booting up my computer), it came with a 2 cd+rw and IR blaster (including the list), I have not updated with the disc, but I will write back if it does anything GOOD or BAD......... hopefully good

  12. Well, the upgrade is for the older models, it says my model does not need the upgrade (it is all ready upgrade). But i got 2 free disc. SUPER

  13. Yeah, I'm using Memorex DVD+RW disks. Found a few of them super cheap at a store so I got what I could. Next week I went back to get some more but they were all gone. So far, in my case, the Memorex +RW works. In fact, the +RW from the Lite on is also playing back on 3 of my regular DVD players as well.

I also notice that the Lite on has a lound spin up when you first put in or start up a disk. Sort of like a DVD-ROM Drive when you put a software disk in it. Since Lite on does computer stuff I wouldn't be suprised one bit if they just took their made for computers DVD burner and just put it in a Lite on set top box/housing.

There's a bonus CD at Lite on? Didn't know about that. I do know they were offering a bonus CD when you got a new recorder after I got mine. They told me at the store that it was just the firmware upgrade CD. Instead of downloading it you could order it and they would send you a disk of it in the mail.

I just bought memorex dvd+r at staples 50 for $20. I have used about 8 and 2 were bad. I used legacy and had good luck.
I have an issue with the guider button. When I press it the image comes up and then goes away. I have to press it 3-4 times before the image stays on the screen and I could choose a function. I have upgraded the firmware I have tried to install it again ,it wont. Also it locks up on occasion. Should I return it ? Newegg has the LVW5005 that records DVD+R and DVD-R for $208.

  17. Just rec'd bonus disks in the mail along with a new IR Blaster Cable. That was fast service.

Can someone explain to me what the IR Blaster Cable does?

  18. Where do you get the bonus/free disks and IR blaster at? I don't see where to get it from their website?

  19. it was on thier firmware download site, but it is not there now, maybe try writing them. I don't know what blasters are. Also i went to a computer store in town and asked about DVD+R and the guy told me, DVD-R are better and more compatible with players, and DVD+R are on thier way out, is this true, or a bunch of bull-honky?

  20. IR blaster controls your cable box or digital cable box.

You would plug one end of the wire into the back of the Lite on. Then put the other end of the wire in front of the "eye" of your digital cable box.

Say you set up a show on channel 3 at 8:00 p.m. on the Lite on. Then you set a show at 11:00 p.m. on channel 36 on the Lite on.

At 8:00 when the Lite on is set to tape your first show it sends a signal from the back of the Lite on, through the wire, to the end of the wire. That signal is read by the "eye" of the digital cable box and changes the cable box to channel 3.

When your next Lite on show (set for ch. 36 at 11 p.m.) occurs then the Lite on sends the singal through the IR blaster to the cable box's "eye" and changes the cable box to channel 36, etc.

This is the eye that receives the signal when you push a remote control and the cable box picks it up. Instead of a TV remote it picks up the Lite on IR blaster signal and changes channels.

True, DVD-R are more compatible. They follow a DVD standard that was established some time ago. DVD+ doesn't follow any guidelines (they are sort of mavricks.) DVD-R plays back more because DVD players have guidelines as to what it needs to play and DVD- gives them those guidelines. DVD+ use there own guidlines. So if Lite on has one set of playback/recording guidelines and Phillips has another then a DVD player might not playback DVD+ from Lite on but will from Phillips, it might playback both or it might not playback any DVD+ from them. Word is new DVD players will playback both formats because they are so close to each other but I have personal experience that DVD+ is quite dodge. They say they playback all but I have DVD players from 2003-2004. I have two DVD- recorders and one DVD+ recorder. The DVD- plays back on all 5 out of my players but the DVD+ played back on 1 out of 5 of my players. After I did the upgrade I have it at DVD- 5 out of 5 players and DVD+ 4 out of 5 players.

Personally, I think that DVD+ is not going out but is being married with DVD- in a do all machines. Like the Lite on 5005 and the Sony's. I think more and more companies know average people don't understand this +- stuff and will try to put + and - formats all in one machine. Then the war will be between companies offering Blue Ray playback and that other format which I can't remember now.

  21. Anyone having fan problems with their 5007? Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I've had this unit about 10 days now. I know that the fan will activate during recording and playback times, as well as, during the TV Guide D/L process. On my unit, however, the fan runs non-stop - even when nothing is running to heat it. Its not a loud fan, but annoying to me because I know its running and I don't think it should. Anyone have any ideas? Is this a defect?
    Quote Quote
  22. I think it may be a defect, my fan does not run all the time, just sometimes. Do you think its possible for a FIRMWARE update to make the 5007 burn on -R (or is that impossible)?
    Quote Quote
  23. My fan is always on when the machine is on. I don't know if it turns off when the machine is turned off though?

Firmware will not make a + unit burn - disks.
    Quote Quote
  24. The fan stays on my unit even when the machine is off. The only time it stops is if I unplug the machine. Because of the TV Guide feature, I need to keep it plugged in or that feature is lost. It was my understanding the fan should only come on intermittently - when the machine got warm or was in use. I'd call tech support and ask, but the last time I called, I was on hold for an hour and they couldn't answer my questions.
    Quote Quote
  25. Freaky, I just checked all of my recorders because they are all off. They were all shut off at the same time. Yet, the other two's fans are totally off and the Lite on's fan is still running. I think it might be the Lite on in general. It's the only fan still running even though the machine is turned off. I have to check it again after it's been off for hours and hours.

I am on my second 5007. The first one the tray didnt open, called tech support and they told me to return it. The second one I have had for a couple of weeks , working pretty good until a few days ago.I got mine for the purpose of converting about 80 camcorder tapes to dvd. I have done about 30, and now it stops recording in the middle of the project or after 2 hours of recording when I think it worked I go to finalize and the it says protected content and wont even play it back. I must have tossed out 10 disks. Its a good machine when it works. My friend got one and has done about 60 dvds with no problems. I have upgraded the firmware when I first got it . What a piece of crap. I e-mailed lite-on a couple of days ago with no response. Its going back to sears today. I might try another one. For another $50 I wonder if I should order the 5005 online. Any thoughts ?
    Quote Quote
  27. Well, I'm stumped. Just came home from work and the fan on the 5007 is OFF. When I left this morning, it was still on. When I returned eleven hours later, it is off. So, I guess it does eventually turn off after the unit is adequatlely cool. I read on the TV Guide Online website, that the information is updated 4 times in a 24 hour period. So, perhaps that feature causes the fan to run more than I anticipated.

I emailed LiteOn in mid-January. I received a phone call 2 days ago. Not good email support if you ask me. I get impatient waiting on the phone for half hour or more. Then when you finally get someone, they seem to have very limited knowledge of the product. That's the reason I tried email to begin with, to ask for level 2 support.

  29. If you read these boards, cdfreaks, as well as the others, seems like the 5001, 5005, 5007, and the ILO all have similar issues. I emailed tech support and rec'd a response in 7 days - not good service. I think my unit is relatively stable and I really like the features for the price. So
I decided to stick with this unit but went to Sears today and purchased the replacement warranty for $24.48.

The response from Lite-on was to go to the setup menu and reset the unit. ??????????? I exchanged it at sears and it was $ 20 less then when I bought it so I got the 2 year warranty for another couple of $. This one seems to be working. I got the warranty because I know its just a matter of time.
