To all,
Well I finally run up against my first real rip problem. I normally use DVDShrink for creating my movie only backups with great success and virtually no problems. However, this time before Shrink can complete its initial analysis (full disc mode) I get a CRC read error. I have cleaned the disk and there are no blemishes or scratches which could point to a problem (after all it is a new disc). I have even tried to use Shrink against the Main movie but exactly the same CRC error happens during the analysis process.
I do believe the disc is a DL disc due to there being about 7Gb worth of data in the VOB files. There are a smattering of other VOB and IFO files, which I presume to be the advertisements, trailers and extras. I do not include these in my movie only backups.
Hearing and reading about the benefits of DVDDecrypter, I decided to give it a go; first in File Mode then in ISO mode. I mention both because I have the same problem with both. When in File mode (for the whole disc) everything seems normal until it get to VTS_04_3.VOB. About 20% of the way through I get a "cannot read sector" error. I can select "retry" and after a fashion it will go on to the next sector, where I get the sector read error again. After about 6 or 7 of these. I abort the file and DVDDecripter moves on to the next file. And again the same process of sector read errors happens. This seems to be a pointless process, so I abort the whole file extract effort.
While in ISO mode all goes along just fine and then up jumps the sector read error again. This time no amount of retries will move past this sector. The only real option is to abort. Which leaves me with a partial ISO file. This file can be read and the files in this partial ISO can be extracted. But it is woefully short for making any kind of backup.
Now for the questions, I have read in other threads about DVDDecrypter being able to process a list of bad sectors and generate a good rip. My questions are: 1) Where does one get or how does one generate this list of bad sectors. I can only presume by trial and error and the thought picture of that process is UGLY or is there a method that I do not know? 2) Now presuming one has magically acquired a list of bad sectors, then what is the file format to use for DVDDecrypter such that it can read and process this list of bad sectors?
As a last thought, I have even tried VOBBlanker which will process the disc without error or so I thought. Playing any of the extracted VOB files with PowerDVD show EXTREME macroblocking interspersed with a green background. This I presumed is due to inaccurate decrypting process. But this output cannot be used in any fashion at all. Maybe someone has some ideas on process here?
For completeness I have tried Smartripper and at least three other programs that will create ISO files. All of these do not seem to work. Same read error.
I do not think that I have a bad original disc as it plays just fine on the PC and desktop units.

Look in the DVD Decrypter section at the DOOM9 website. There are many threads discussing the problem of bad sectors with different movies. Perhaps your movie will be one of them.

Make sure you're using the latest version of DVD Decrypter and in the "Tools" menu, select "Settings". Go to the CSS tab and de-select "Detect Mastering Errors" in the Options section. Then go to the I/O section and check "Ignore Read Errors" in the Options section.
You can now rip the movies with Decrypter, compress with Shrink and burn with Decrypter.
